  • FHWA works with State and Local transportation
    agencies, highway associations, private industry,
    and other Federal Government agencies and the
    U.S. Congress
  • FHWA administers the Federal-aid Highway Program,
    an annual multibillion dollar program of
    financial assistance to the States to construct
    and improve the National Highway System.

    Transportation (USDOT)

    Offices, 3 Federal Lands offices, Resource Center
    Offices and a Headquarters office in Washington,
    D.C.

    Projects that have a cost estimate that exceeds 1
    billion dollars or projects with National
    Significance.

  • Oversight Managers provide a Federal Government
    oversight role over multiple project managers.
  • Oversight Managers provide project administration
    and oversight, including activities including
    planning and environment requirements, design,
    right-of-way, project financing, construction,
    and contract administration.

The Major Project Oversight Manager Program
  • 3 year commitment to FHWA to become a Major
    Project Oversight Manager.
  • 2 years in the Professional Development Program.
  • 1 year being an Assistant Manager to a Major
    Project Oversight Manager.
  • After 3 years, you should have strong
    understandings of the role of the Oversight
    Manager and may be given the challenge of
    becoming a Major Project Oversight Manager.

What is the Professional Development Program
(PDP)?
  • Consists of on-the-job training, diverse
    developmental assignments, and participation at a
    Professional Development Academy.
  • PDP program emphasizes diversity of experience as
    a key element in the preparation of our most
    capable employees for higher level positions.

How does the PDP work?
  • Participants are assigned to a Sponsoring Offices
    that serves as their home base for the duration
    of the program.
  • Participants will complete several developmental
    assignments which may be in different
    geographical areas.
  • Participants attend a variety of courses and
    seminars that will provide participants the
    foundation knowledge to become a FHWA
    professional.

  • Shadow role for participant
  • Opportunity for hands-on experience working on a
    Major Project
  • Further Develop Project Management,
    Professionalism, Leadership Skill Sets
  • Mobility required for on-site training.

The FHWA Requirements
  • Sincere Interest
  • Graduate degree or equivalent in Project
    Management, Construction Management or Related
    Field.
  • Geographic and occupational mobility is
    necessary.
  • Transportation Industry experience is helpful,
    but not required.
