GENERAL INFORMATION
  • 30 recognized chapters all are nationally
    affiliated and in good standing with the Office
    of Student Activities and the University
  • Approximately 1,000 recognized members
  • Approximately 6 of the total campus population
  • Chapters provide a variety of programs, raise
    money for local/national charities, complete many
    hours of service to the campus and surrounding
    communities

What are the benefits of joining the Fraternity
and Sorority Community?
  • SCHOLARSHIP one of the main principles of Greek
    organizations is academic achievement chapters
    provide a strong academic support system for all
    members
  • LEADERSHIP chapters emphasize the development
    of leadership skills for all members some of the
    most active leaders on campus are active members
    of the Greek community
  • COMMUNITY SERVICE all recognized chapters host
    fundraising events and volunteer at events to
    benefit local/national charities this is a
    common founding principle for all fraternities
    and sororities

What are the benefits of joining the Fraternity
and Sorority Community?
  • CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT each chapter encourages its
    members to be active members of other
    organizations and activities on campus
  • FRIENDSHIP involvement in fraternities/sororitie
    s gives students the opportunity to meet new
    people who share similar interests and values
    these experiences help extend friendship networks
    on and off campus these friendships can end up
    lasting a life-time

What Do We Do???

Greek Philanthropy
  • Greek Week
  • The Fraternity and Sorority Community raised over
    8,600 in one week for Habitat for Humanity and
    Bright Beginnings Homeless Shelter for Children.
    Events included Shack-A-Thon, Greek Sing, and
    Quiz Show
  • Chapter Philanthropies
  • Each chapter has their own philanthropies that
    they raise funds for all year long. Over the
    past year our chapters raised over 26,697 for
    various causes including Breast Cancer, Pediatric
    AIDS Foundation, Heart Disease, American Red
    Cross, Virginia Tech Hokie Fund and American
    Diabetes Association just to name a few!

Greek Service
  • Service Hours
  • Fraternity and Sorority students also contribute
    of their time and skills to many causes. Over
    the past year over 2,000 hours of service was
    reported to office. This included volunteer work
    for Celebrate Fairfax, Capital Area Food Bank,
    GMU Career Center, and mentoring/tutoring
    services.
  • Committed to the University and the Community
  • Move in, area businesses, highway cleanup, GMU
    Police, Athletics, ODPS etc.

Greek Stats
  • Nationally
  • There are over 9 million Greek members nationally
  • 85 of the Fortune 500 executives belong to a
    fraternity/sorority
  • Every U.S. President and Vice President, except
    two in each office, born since the first social
    fraternity was founded in 1825 have been members
    of a fraternity
  • Over 7 million is raised each year by Greeks
    nationally
  • The Greek system is the largest network of
    volunteers in the US, with members donating over
    10 million hours of volunteer service each year
  • A U.S. Government study shows that over 70 of
    all those who join a fraternity/sororitiy
    graduate, while under 50 of all
    non-fraternity/sorority persons graduate
  • A study by the University of Missouri found that
    Greeks throughout the US and Canada are more
    involved on their campuses and rate their overall
    university experience better.

  • 3 Sororities have floor in housing
  • All GREEK GPA is 2.86 (w 2.95, m 2.74)
  • Over 2,000 hours of community service done this
    year

  • One of our GREEK students was appointed to the
    Bush Task Force for Veterans

WHO CAN JOIN?
  • ANYONE who is a currently an enrolled FULL-TIME
    enrolled student at George Mason University
  • ALL interested students MUST have at least a
  • 2.0 GPA!
  • First-semester freshmen are allowed to join the
    Interfraternity Council chapters, Panhellenic
    Council chapters, and Kappa Phi Lambda Pan-Asian
    Sorority
  • In order to join a National Pan-Hellenic Council
    or Multi-Cultural Greek Council chapter you must
    have completed at least one 12 credit semester.

HOW TO JOIN A FRATERNITY/SORORITY
  • The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic
    Council organize and host a selection process
    known as Recruitment or Rush these events
    are held in the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • The National Pan-Hellenic Council and
    Multi-Cultural Greek Council chapters host what
    is known as membership intake each chapter hosts
    intake activities individually interest sessions
    are held by individual chapters throughout the
    semesters.

  • Get information in IFC RUSH
  • Get information on MGC and NPHC Groups
  • You can visit ME in the Office of Student

  • Talk to people who are in Fraternities and
    Sororities!!!
