• Marbury v. Madison Headed by Justice Marshall.
  The Supreme Court ruled that part of an act of
  congress called the Judiciary Act of 1789 was
  unconstitutional.

• Battle starts raging between France and England
• At first Washington said U.S. must follow
  Neutrality.
• After much debate of who to side with Hamilton
  Federalists (England) Jefferson Republicans

• Alien Act - Under the alien act the President
  gained the right to imprison or deport citizens
  of other countries residing in the U.S.

• Sedition Act Under the Sedition act persons who
  wrote, published, or said anything of a false
  scandalous and malicious nature against the U.S.
  government or officials could be fined or jailed.

Doctrine of Nullification

• Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions These
  resolutions argued that states had the right to
  judge whether federal laws agreed with
  constitution. They could then declare the law
  null and void (Nullification)

  Million to Jefferson!!
