- Makah signed a 1855 U.S. Treaty that Gives them
Sovereign (or Constitutional) Rights to Whaling
for Subsistence - However, the 1946 U.S. Treaty with the
International Whaling Commission banned
Whalingthis agreement also has Constitutional
Authority.

to hunt whales
In 1999, U.S. government allowed them rights to 3
years of hunting with no more than 5 whales taken
each year.
