5ICE AGE
What is an Ice Age?
A cold period marked by episodes of extinctive
glaciations alternating with episodes of relative
warmth.
An ice age is a relatively cool period in Earth
history, when vast ice sheets cover much of
Earths land surface. There have been at least
five major ice ages during the last billion
years. The most recent ice age began 2.5 million
years ago.
6ICE AGE
How Ice Ages form?
- During the Quaternary Period high latitude
Winters have been cold enough for snow to
accumulate excessively .
- During this time the summers are cold because
the Sun is at its farthest point in the Earths
orbit.
- This means that the snow never melts from the
other winters.
- This will go on for centuries and ice sheets
will begin to form.
7ICE AGE
- Ice ages have occurred about two million years
ago which had cold (glacial), and relatively warm
(interglacial phases)
When/why do Ice Ages occur?
When
- The most recent ice age was about 70 thousand
years ago and ended about 10 thousand years ago.
- About 97 of Canada was covered by ice.
- The thickest areas of ice was in Hudson Bay
with approximately 3,300 meters deep.
- Currently we are in an interglacial phase that
will last another 10 000 or more years
- INTERGLACIAL A comparatively short period of
warmth during an overall period of glaciations.
8ICE AGE
97 of Canada was covered!
9ICE AGE
- There are four major factors why we have Ice
Ages
Why
- 1, The earths axis is wobbly, much like a
spinning top thats wobbles after it slows down.
This wobble can go up to 23.5 degrees on either
side of the axis. Depending on the tilt depends
on the amount of sunlight going into different
parts of the earth.
- 2, The greater the tilt, the stronger the
difference in seasons. (i.e., more tilt equals
sharper differences between summer and winter
temperatures.
- 3, This process takes over 41 thousand years.
- 4, This also changes the earths path on its
elliptical path. The process is called
precession of equinoxes. This process takes
23,000 years to complete. During this time the
ice sheets would form.

Interesting Facts

- Wolly Mammoths
- Saber Toothed Cats
- Coelodonta
- Deodircurus
- Elasmotherium
- Glyphtodon
- Smilodon

Interesting Facts
Believe it or not Humans actually lived though
the Ice Age. Many lived in caves where they have
left stone relics. They would communicate using
signs and symbols. Mostly they would eat stuff
they would hunt or plants they could find.
14So
That was good Eh?
15Well guess what!!
16We aint done yet!!

winters. - This will go on for centuries and ice
sheets will begin to form.
