    after Feb 1.

web and kept in consolidated database.

5
NASS Application ProcessPSAT Search
  • Earlier delivery date (change by College Board)
    enabled end of February mailing.
  • Narrowed search based on projected field of
    study.
  • Raised quality while keeping applicant numbers
    consistent with previous years.

6
Application Process
  • Once the request for an application was processed
the application paperwork was mailed directly
from Admissions or an outsourcing agent in the
    case of the PSAT search.
  • Completed applications were routed directly to
the RDs. Folders were built to house extra
    information.
  • Facilitated division of labor and application
receipt questions could be answered by the RDs /
    MACs.

7
Selection Process
  • RDs, MACs, and the Womens Advocate evaluated
    their own applicants.
  • Selections were made on a periodic basis (2
    weeks).
  • Only definite non-players were turned down early
    in the process.

8
Program Highlights
  • Largest ever with 1135 attendees. Every state
    represented and 2 overseas candidates.
  • Overall coordination and management of events by
    midshipmen was excellent.
  • Quality of selectees was exceptional. Highest

  • Very few registration surprises.

  • The students favorite event of the week was
    Plebe Indoctrination (56).
  • The Iwo Jima trip was second favorite (15)
  • The least favorite event of the week was the
    academic seminars (21).
  • The second least favorite event of the week was
the PT (19) except, of course, those interested
    in Marine Corps!!

21
NASS Attendee Critiques
  • The overwhelming favorite workshop was Sailing.
  • Seamanship and Navigation, Physics, Naval
Architecture, and Ocean Engineering were also
    very popular.
  • Math, Oceanography, Technology Assisted Language
Learning, History, Intro to Rhetoric rated poorly
    among the students.

22
Proposed Changes for 1999-2000
  • Utilize Target Marketing database to mail all
juniors NASS applications. This allows students
that request information via the web to receive
an application for NASS if they are within the
    age window.
  • Submit all searches into Targets database to
    eliminate duplicate mailings.
  • Develop a new NASS application that acts as a PCQ
    as well.
  • Discontinue the BGO request for application
    process.
  • BGO inputs via the web will be coded so CGO will
know the names of students BGOs highly recommend.
  • Move the PAE earlier in the session.
