Background
  • Energy and the environment are pivotal global
    problems of the current century.
  • This is an area of great BC and Canadian
    interest.
  • UBC has considerable expertise in clean energy.
  • The Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC) in the
    Faculty of Applied Science is a leader in this
    area.
  • BC Hydro is supporting the initiative with 200K
    per year for 3 years. They require that we be up
    and running by the time of the Olympics.
  • Program proposal has Faculty approval and has
    been submitted for Senate and Province approval.

New Program Content
  • 9 credits of required courses CEEN 501, 502, 523
  • 14 credits of approved electives
  • 6-credit project for most students a paid work
    term with industry (CEEN 596)
  • 1-credit seminar course (CEEN 597)
  • 30-credit program can be completed in 12-16 months

  • CEEN 501 Thermal Energy Systems
  • CEEN 502 Alternative Energy Technologies
  • CEEN 523 Energy and the Environment
  • CEEN 596 Project and Report
  • CEEN 597 Seminar
  • Elective Courses
  • 5 courses drawn from list related to Energy,
    Environment and Sustainability.
  • Must include 1 course dealing with energy policy
    and one with energy economics.

Instructors
  • Instructors will be drawn from
  • Approximately 25 CERC-affiliated faculty from
    CHBE, EECE, MECH and other departments
  • Lecturers from industry
  • Other part-time lecturers as needed.

Admission Requirements
  • Same as other M.Eng. programs 4-year Bachelors
    degree in engineering or a closely-related
    discipline.
  • 76 or B in senior-level coursework. An
    applicant with lt 76 may be admitted if 80 or
    higher has been achieved in at least 12 credits
    of senior-level coursework, and ? 74 in
    remaining senior-level coursework

Note Students without Thermodynamics background
at the second-year level or above will need to
take remedial thermodynamics before they can take
the CEEN 501 course.

Fees
  • Canadian students 14,940 for 3 academic terms.
  • International 24, 930 for 3 academic
    terms
  • Offsets 10 scholarships of 5,000 each.
  • Payment for work terms of 3,000 per month
    for 4-month coop work terms, i.e. 12,000, half
    subsidized by BC Hydro. In that case, students
    will need to pay a coop fee of 600 for the
    summer work term.

Implementation and Deadline
  • Subject to approval, we are planning to start the
    new program in September 2009.
  • Deadline for applications June 30, 2009
