Title: Integrating Media Based Evidence into VAAP, VGLA, and VSEP
1Integrating Media Based Evidence into VAAP, VGLA,
and VSEP
- Administrators Update Workshops
- August 2008
- Virginia Department of Education
2Agenda
- Why use media in COEs/ CWCs?
- Where do I begin?
- How do I decide about types of evidence?
- What are some helpful media tips?
- Where do I get help with the technology?
3Why Use Media?
- To capture the students knowledge and skills in
the COE or CWC - To match the assessment method with the ways the
student demonstrates skills and knowledge
4Examples
- List all types of high and low technology media
that can be included in a Collection of Evidence
or Course Work Compilation. - You have 3 minutes.
5Types of Media
- Audio/ Video
- Smart Board
- Power Point slide presentation
- Poster
- Projects
- Captioned Photographs
- Charts/ Graphs
6Where Do I Begin?
- Two part focus
- Student Profile
- SOL to be assessed
- What can we do to best show what the student
understands and is able to do?
7Student Profile
- Student strengths, interests, learning style
- Accommodations required
- Instructional strategies that appeal to the
students learning style - Best methods for demonstrating skills and
knowledge for the student - Methods to avoid
8 Your Student Profile
- List some characteristics of a student
participating in VAAP, VGLA, or VSEP. - You have 3 minutes.
9Sample - Marcus
- Talks a lot, likes to be a ham, and is easily
distracted - Participates eagerly when instructional and
assessment opportunities involve hands-on or
movement activities
10Marcus
- Seems to be an auditory learner
- Instructional computer activities are more
effective than paper-pencil work - Extremely artistic and adds an artistic touch to
written assignments
11Marcus
- Performs better when tests are read orally (
read-aloud accommodation is stated in students
IEP.) - Written work is often rushed, careless and
incomplete
12Types of Evidence for Marcus
- Video
- Audio
- Projects (brochure, poster, etc.)
- Computer based products (Power Point, computer
learning games, use of Smart Board, etc.)
13Types of Evidence to Minimize for Marcus
- Worksheets
- Written reports
- Multiple choice tests
- Multiple choice tests as evidence is not allowed
for VSEP
14SOL Example
- SOL Reading 8.5c
- 8.5 The student will read and analyze a variety
of narrative and poetic forms - c. describe how authors use characters, conflict,
point of view, and tone to create meaning.
15Discussion
- Make a list of suggested media-based assessment
activities to address SOL Reading 8.5c,
including - character
- conflict
- point of view
- tone
- You have 5 minutes.
16Suggested Assessment Activities for Marcus(to
address the stem)
- Record an audio of Marcus reading selected
sections from the narratives and poetry used for
the assessment activities. - Reading of narratives and poetry can be inferred.
17Authors Use of Characters(Suggested activities)
- Produce a video or audio of Marcus reading the
dialogue as a character in a narrative - Record a video of Marcus discussing point of view
as a character in the narrative
18Authors Use of Characters(Suggested activities)
- Create an audio or video of panel discussion/
debate with Marcus as a character from a
narrative - Produce a video of Marcus being interviewed on a
talk show as a character from a narrative
19Authors Use of Conflict (Suggested activities)
- Record a video tape a news broadcast developed
about the conflict in the story - Develop a Power Point presentation on the
conflict in a short story or poem
20Authors Use of Point of View (Suggested
activities)
- Record a video of Marcus acting out his rewrite
of a portion of a short story from a different
characters point of view - Record multiple readings of a poem changing the
point of view from which it is read
21Authors Use of Tone (Suggested activities)
- Create PowerPoint presentation to compare a
selected poem to a given narrative or poem - Record a video clip interviewing Marcus
describing the tone of a given narrative or poem
22Suggested Low Technology Activities
- Illustrate a story or poem to show the tone of
the selection - Use poster paper and markers to make a word web
that reveal the tone of a selection - Add illustrations to the web that show the tone
23Suggested Low Technology Activities
- Prepare a poster describing the types of conflict
and examples of stories that illustrate each type - Create a travel brochure of the geographic
setting of a story from the point of view of one
of the characters
24Suggested Low Technology Activities
- Develop a three-dimensional character cube from
a given narrative or poem describing the authors
use of character. - Use captioned photograph of this project
- Include a statement of accuracy
25SOL Example
- SOL Math 6.12b
- 6.12 The student will
- b. derive approximations for pi (?) from
measurements for circumference and diameter,
using concrete materials or computer models
26Suggestions for Activities
- What are some media based assessment activities
that could be used to assess SOL Math 6.12b? - You have 2 minutes
27Suggestions for Activities
- Take photos or develop a video of student
measuring the circumference and diameter of a
variety of cans or cylinders and comparing the
two measurements by dividing the circumference
and diameter to discover pi (?) . - Include a caption with the photos
- Include statement of accuracy
28Suggestions for Activities
- Use a computer to develop and complete a data
table to record the measurements, ratios, and
quotients
29SOL Example
- SOL Math 7.4 a,b
- 7.4 The student will
- a. solve practical problems using rational
numbers (whole numbers, fractions, decimals) and
percents and - b. solve consumer application problems involving
tips, discounts, sales tax, and simple interest.
30Suggestions for Activities
- What are some media based activities that could
be used to assess SOL Math 7.4 a,b? - You have 2 minutes
31Suggestions for Activities
- Construct an advertising poster that would
include pictures of sale items, the regular
price, percent off, the sale price, and the total
price with tax - Use a computer to make a wallet-sized tip chart
32ASOL Example
- ASOL Science S-FME4a
- ASOL S-FME 4 The student will investigate and
understand simple machines and their uses. Key
concepts include - a. types of simple machines (lever, screw,
pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, and wedge)
33Suggestions for Activities
- What are some media-based activities that could
be used to assess ASOL Science S-FME 4a? - You have 2 minutes
34Suggestions for Activities
- Record a video tape of the student selecting the
requested simple machine from an array of items
35Suggestions for Activities
- Record a video tape of the student using the
machines for practical purposes - Wheel and axle wheelbarrow
- Wedge doorstop
- Inclined plane wheelchair ramp
- Pulley flag raising
- Screw attaching objects with a screw
- Lever opening a paint can
36Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- Use a picture caption or anecdotal record to
- Describe the task
- State the degree of accuracy or correctness of
the students responses
37Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- List the supports or accommodations used
- Clearly designate the students individual
achievement in a group activity
38Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- Place a signed release form for all video, audio
and photographs in the students school file
39Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- Indicate the file type on the DVD case and on the
DVD - Provide a script of all audio and video
recordings
40Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- Do not put the SEI Tag directly on the DVD
- Put the SEI Tag on the DVD case
- Write the information from the SEI Tag on the DVD
- Put an SEI Tag on the script
41Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- Indicate the students voice when more than one
voice is heard on the recording
42Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- If multiple standards are addressed on one audio
or video recording include a list using the
counter - Example Math SOL 3.5 001-030 Math SOL
3.6 045-100
43Technical Tips for Utilizing Media
- State the SOL/ ASOL number at the beginning of
each portion of the recording
