3Display Technology Market Size
- Displays are key components in most electronic
systems
- Display component market is expanding rapidly
- Top tier display companies expect to grow have
40 revenue growth in 2004

4Introduction to Display Technology
- Display technology is extremely multidisciplinary
- Displays are not devices, each is an integrated
system - Display technology requires extensive RD and
manufacturing infrastructure - Diverse applications, variety of device
technologies

5Display Technology is very Multidisciplinary
6Role of IEEE in Display Technology
- IEEE member societies do not have a highly
visible role in Display technology - No major IEEE conferences on display technology
- Little emphasis on display related research in
IEEE Journals - Several IEEE Societies have technical committees
with displays as a theme - CES and BTS Advanced Television Systems
Committee - LEOS Displays Committee
- EDS Displays, Sensors and MEMS Committee
- SSCS Display Electronics
- Multidisciplinary nature of display technology
makes it difficult to have a single IEEE entity
which could support our member needs

8On the Need for a New IEEE Journal
- Large number of IEEE members work in the display
industry - Display technology is multidisciplinary,
difficult to have a single IEEE entity such as a
technical council - In addition, Society for Information Display
(SID) is well established to represent display
industry - SID mainly focuses industrial and marketing
audience - SID Conferences are well managed, SID 2003 6
days, 500 papers, 5700 attendees, 451 booths - Same can not be said about SID publications
- J of SID and Displays (Elsevier) are not well
recognized - Development of a new IEEE Journal of Display
Technology presents opportunity to create 1
journal - Opportunity to attract large number of display
researchers to the institute
9Competition J. of SID
Papers from sourced from conferences 3-4 issues a
year
- SID membership grew 400 in 10 yrs vs. 500
growth in the display industry - J. SID does not reflect growth in society
membership or display industry - J. SID - few library subscriptions
- Few citations, ISI Impact Factor of 0.357 (2002)
10Competition - Displays (Elsevier)
- Elsevier has been publishing Displays for over 15
years - Displays focus is on application of displays
technology and human factor issues
- 2002 Statistics
- Published 29 papers in 4 issues
- ISI Impact Factor 0.357
- 152 citations
11Prospects for a New IEEE Journal
- Display industry is going through tremendous
growth - 100B industry, expected to grow rapidly over the
next ten years, 40 growth in 2004 - A large number of IEEE members work in the
display industry - Journal provides for retaining and increasing
membership - Prospects for new members from the Far East and
Europe - Potential to create 1 display technology journal
12Logistics for a new IEEE Journal
- LEOS BoG voted to support the new journal
- TAB - New Technology Breakout in Seattle
discussed the topic and supports the idea - Participation from EDS, CES, IAS, SSCS, CPMT
- EDS, CES Publications Committees support the new
journal, planning for AdCom vote - CPMT, SSCS, IAS, CS initiating contacts
