The Newsletter of The Arc of Adams County
The Arc of Adams County is launching a new
website in November! Our website address will be
www.arcadams.org. Please visit and let us hear
what you think about our new website.
If you are not already aware, Mile High United
Way, in conjunction with 40 community
organizations, is involved in a Colorado
collaborative that launched 211 - a three digit
telephone number that will make it easier for the
public to get and give help. 211 Colorado will
build upon the success and infrastructure on
existing Information and Referral (IR) services
across the state. Mile High United Ways
HELPLINE - which handled more than 12,000 calls
in 2002, approximately 50 percent of all IR
calls in the state of Colorado - will be
integrated into the 211 Colorado
collaborative. Dialing 211 will be free to the
public, and will be built upon existing
Information and Referral programs where
available. The Governing Board will work to
develop statewide partnerships and other types of
ongoing support to ensure financial viability and
excellence for the system.

Self-Determination
...when power and control over human lives
shifts (gradually and responsibly) from systems
to the people themselves and their freely chosen
allies, lives improve and better value is
achieved for the dollars spent... The
Principles Freedom - to live a meaningful life in
the community Authority - over dollars needed for
support Support - to organize resources in ways
that are life enhancing and meaningful
Responsibility - for the wise use of public
dollars Confirmation - of the important
leadership that self advocates must hold in a
newly designed system (Taken from The Center for
Self-Determination, Web-HomePage,
www.self-determination.com) We will have a
special guest speaker at our Annual Meeting to
discuss Self-Determination and what it can mean
in your life!

Frequenty Asked Questions..
1) Are there any limitations on who can set up a
trust? A trust fund can be set up by a potential
beneficiary, a parent, grandparents or by court
order. The beneficiary must receive Medicaid or
by applying for Medicaid. 2) How much does it
cost to join CFPD (Colorado Fund for People with
Disabilities) ? 250 set up fee 2 of all
deposits 1 renewal fee at anniversary
10/month accounting fee Care Manager
65/hour Bookkeeping 28/hour other fees for
vacation, companion and shopping services. 3) How
long does it take to set up a trust fund? CFPDs
trust document has already been approved by the
state of Colorado. This speeds up the entire
application process. The process usually takes
one week, although it can be done in several
hours if necessary. 4) How are expenditures
approved? The beneficiary makes requests to their
liaison or care manager. The request is then
submitted to Executive Director for approval.
Once funds are disbursed, the expenditure can be
made. Note, some expenditures must be approved
by the Board of Directors. The board meets
monthly. 5) How are the funds invested? All funds
are invested with the Trust Department at the
Bank of Cherry Creek - soon to be American
National Bank. The Board of Directors makes all
investment decisions. 6) What are the benefits of
CFPD instead of an individual disability trust?
Care management services are available to help
manage and access the funds. These care managers
have experience working with people with
disabilities and their families. Care managers
are also able to develop and coordinate supports
when needed. CFPD is a non-profit organization,
so any interest gained is not taxed. Upon the
death of a beneficiary, any remaining money is
put into CFPDs charitable fund for the benefit
of other people with disabilities. For further

Patient Assistance Programs We wanted to let you
know about a free service to help low income
people obtain free prescriptions. All the major
pharmaceutical companies have Patient Assistance
Programs which donate medications to people who
qualify. Not every medication is available, but
a great many are. Every Patient Assistance
Program has its own eligibility rules and
applications. At Seniors Inc. we have all the
applications and will help people fill them out
and submit them. This is a free service, made
possible, in part, by grants from the Comprecare
Foundation and the HealthOne Alliance. The
service is available to anyone, regardless of
age. Eligibility Requirements Income less
than 16,000 per year for an individual or less
than 24,000 for a household. Income
includes all wages, social security payments,
pensions and any other forms of income. The
different pharmaceutical companies have different
income eligibility requirements, but these
are the general guidelines. Have no private
insurance coverage or Medicaid that includes a
pharmacy benefit. If you know someone who meets
these requirements, have them call Seniors, Inc.
We will be glad to help. Not all medications are
available, and it can take 6 weeks or more to
receive the medications, so plan
ahead. 303-300-6945 (in the Denver metro
area) 1-866-432-9696 (outside metro Denver) This
is a free service. Seniors, Inc. is a
not-for-profit organization serving the people of
Colorado since 1969.
