From the Bottom of the Earth! Radio Astronomy
from the South Pole

Abstract From the very bottom of the Earth, a
band of intrepid astro-physicists have been
exploring the wonders of the universe. Braving
temperatures below -100F (200 Kelvin) during the
six months of continuous darkness, they have
built and operated a series of telescopes to
study the universe and the galaxy around
us. Pack your bags (and your parkas) and let me
take you on a journey to the bottom of the world.
I'll take you on a tour of AST/RO (the Antarctic
Sub-mm telescope/ Remote Observatory) describing
how it works and some of the wonderful things we
have discovered about the dynamics of the Milky
Way galaxy.
