5 Simple Ways to Protect Your Childs Tooth Enamel
  • If you suspect that your child is suffering from
dental erosion, visit a childrens dental clinic
for a proper diagnosis. This condition is
characterized by the loss of the tooth enamel,
making the teeth susceptible to cavities and
toothaches. As a parent, you can also take steps
to protect your childs tooth enamel and prevent
this condition from developing or getting worse.
    Below are some tips
  • Brush and floss
  • Teach your child good oral hygiene habits. Get
them a soft-bristled toothbrush in a colour or
design that they like to make brushing fun.
  • Soft bristles are great for kids because theyre
gentler on the teeth and gums and wont wear
down the enamel. Teach your child to brush their
teeth for two minutes at least twice a day. If
two minutes feels too long, let them brush to
their favourite song. Introduce the habit of
flossing at least once a day, too.
  • Its important to use good toothpaste when
brushing. Avoid whitening toothpaste because they
have abrasive properties that could wear down
    the enamel.
  • Rinse after meals
  • Encourage your child to drink water after every
meal. If youre away from home and theres no
access to a toothbrush, have your child swish
cool water in their mouth for 20 seconds after
eating to help dislodge food from between teeth.
Tell them to spit it out.
  • Avoid food and drinks that can cause damage
  • Making healthier food choices can prevent tooth
problems. Limit starchy food like fries and
crisps because the starch metabolizes into sugar,
which can stick to teeth and become a breeding
ground for bacteria that will eat the tooth
enamel. You should also minimize your childs
intake of soda or carbonated beverages because
they are acidic and can compromise the enamel.
  • Add dairy to your childs diet
