George Frideric Handel

• Born 23 February 1685 in Germany.
• Son of a barber-surgeon

Handels best known work

• Wrote Messiah late 1730s early 1740
• Messiah had its premiere in Dublin in 1741-2
• During his last decade he gave regular
  performances of Messiah

• 1749 wrote music to accompany the Royal
  Fireworks.
• Fireworks celebrated the Peace of Aix-La
  Chapelle.
• Handel died in 1759
• Buried in Westminster Abby

• Handel was recognized in England and Germany as
  the greatest composer of his day.
• Wide range of expression
• Vivid sense of drama
• Had a resource and originality of invention
• Supreme Master of the baroque era in music

• Born March 21, 1685
• 11th son and youngest
• Orphaned at the age of 10

• Copied music by moonlight
• Could support himself by the time he was 15
• Walked miles often without food to hear concerts
• Mastered several instruments
• Employed as a violinist in a court orchestra
• Employed as a church organist

• At the age of 22 he married his cousin Maria
  Barbara Bach
• Had 4 children
• Married Anna Magdalena
• 13 children 6 of whom survived
• Free time spent at home with family

• Most of his music published after his death
