Bananas growing in bags to protect them from
insects
Bananas are the most important crop in St
Lucias agricultural sector, earning about 40 of
the countrys export earnings. St Lucias small
banana farmers struggle to compete with big US
firms that grow bananas on a large scale in
countries like Ecuador and Honduras in Latin
America. However in 1993 the EU introduced
quotas on the amount of bananas that could be
imported from Latin American banana-growing
countries. The banana industry boomed as a
result. In 2001 the EU quotas were declared
illegal forcing causing many farmers in St Lucia
out of business.
