Title: Turning waste into fuel

1
Turning waste into fuel
  • Alan Banks
  • President CEO

2
Who are we?
Low sulphur dioxide, no carbon dioxide
Anglo-American renewable energy company
headquartered in Fort Lauderdale and London
Build, own and operate facilities that use an
advanced gasification process to turn biomass
into biofuel
3
What is our strategy in Florida
  • Re-commissioning Floridas only corn-to-ethanol
plant in Bartow, Polk County to produce 12m
    gallons of ethanol
  • Co-locating a 6m gallon biomass gasification
plant with the corn ethanol plant and integrating
    1st and 2nd generation technologies
  • Expanding our biomass to ethanol production at
Bartow to 25m gallons per year
  • Looking to build another 5x 25 m gallon
facilities in Florida using biomass crops and
    waste biomass

Corn supply opportunity for Florida farmers
  • Bartow plant will need around 4 million bushels
of No.2 corn annually output from around 25,000
    acres
  • Florida used to grow 750,000 of corn in
    mid-1970s
  • March planting with irrigation yields of
175/225 bu/acre at cash costs of around 2/bu
  • Losonoco will enter into farm contracts in
    January for 2008
  • Typically pricing at the elevator is CBOT 35c.
Losonoco pays CBOT 50c to import corn
  • Losonoco is prepared to share the 85c margin with
producers to improve price for both parties

6
Losonoco intends to build a biomass gasification
plant at the Bartow facility
  • Propose to build a 125 ton/day gasification
facility producing 6 million gallons of ethanol
  • Losonocos process can use a wide variety of
    residues
  • Yard, agricultural and forestry residues
  • Waste oils and grease
  • Tires and auto fluff
  • Garbage
  • Waste water sludges
  • First plant will be designed to use corn stover,
citrus residues, yard and forestry waste and
    switchgrass
  • Switchgrass could provide another future crop
    opportunity for Florida farmers

7
The Skygas gasification process
  • Can use a wide variety of co-mingled waste
streams at up to 55 moisture content
  • Produces a pure syngas with up to 90 carbon
monoxide and hydrogen able to produce
  • Ethanol
  • LPG (DME)
  • Ammonia
  • Electricity/steam
  • Low electrical load of around 350 Kw/ton
  • Operates at temperatures at which dioxins and
    furfurans do not form
  • Has no stack minimal air emissions
  • Ash is lt5 minimal land emissions

Integrating gasification into corn ethanol plants
has several advantages
  • Environmentalists dont like corn ethanol for
    several reasons
  • Takes land out of food production
  • Corn crop has high use of fertilizers made from
    natural gas
  • Ethanol plants use lots of natural gas for steam
    production
  • Integrating gasification in a corn ethanol plant
can address most of these issues, and add value
    to the business
  • Uses the stover and straw, maximizing the energy
gain per acre of land used
  • Losonocos gasification process can also use the
    wet DGS
  • The syngas from gasification can be used to
    produce fertilizer
  • The syngas can be combusted to raise steam
  • The syngas can be catalytically converted back
    into additional ethanol
  • Gasification can be used to re-model and improve
    existing unviable corn ethanol plants

9
Florida The next renewable energy giant?
  • With new political will and abundant resources
Florida can be the next California for renewable
    energy
  • With 8.5bn gallons of fuel used each year, there
    is a clear imperative
  • Bartow, in the epicentre of Florida, has an
opportunity to become a biofuels hub
  • Losonoco will start the process by building both
1st and 2nd generation biofuel facilities
  • Losonoco would like to work with Florida cities
to make our ethanol available as E85
  • Our door is open!
