22What is Ozone?
- Ozone is a gas that is found in the stratosphere
and the troposphere (ground level) - At ground level, ozone is an air pollutant that
affects human health, damages vegetation and
common materials and is an ingredient of smog
23Ozone (O3)
24How Does Ground Level Ozone Form?
- VOCs NOx Sunlight Ozone
- When high levels of VOCs and NOx react in the
presence of sunlight and hot weather, ground
level ozone forms. - Other factors involved with the formation of
ground level ozone cloud cover, wind direction,
and low wind speeds. When weather conditions are
conducive, and there are ample amounts of NOx and
VOCs, harmful concentrations of ground level
ozone can form in the air.
25Ozone Formation
26Health Effects From Air Pollutants
- Irritates eyes, nose, throat and respiratory
system - Aggravates lung diseases
- Causes premature aging of lungs
- Stresses cardiovascular system
27People at Risk
- Children
- Active adults
- Elderly
- People with lung and
- heart illnesses
