OBJECTIVES FOR CLASS
  • In this class you will learn
  • Techniques that will inspire you to get the
stickers out of your collection and onto your
    scrapbook pages.
  • Techniques for developing scrapbook titles that
will enhance a layout design through contrast,
    unity, variety, rhythm and movement.
  • Learn how to maintain your punches, attach
punched pieces, create dimension with punched
images, enhance punched pieces, and incorporate
punched creations in your scrapbook layouts.

4
TITLE FUNDAMENTALS
  • As with lettering and penmanship, good title
design is based upon the harmonious balance of
    proper letterform, size, and spacing.

5
TITLE FUNDAMENTALS
  • Title Size
  • A small title will be lost with large photos and
    embellishments.
  • A large title can overpower and draw too much
    attention.
  • Look for balance and good proportions when
    creating the title.
  • Title Letterform
  • Titles function well when they communicate the
    mood of a page.
  • The design of the typeface can evoke feelings.
  • There are many selections when choosing a
    typeface.
  • Examine letterform options carefully and make
selections based on the mood of the page.
  • Title Spacing
  • Properly place the title to have the most impact.
  • Separate words or letters of your title and
weave them through a design to create movement.

6
TITLE FORMULAS
  • Use your title to move the readers eye around
    the entire layout.
  • The title is placed in a position of prominence,
so it makes sense to tie it to the other elements
    of the design.
  • What better way to get the reader to look at your
most important element than to place the title
    within the focal point?
  • If your title looks like it does not belong on
    the page, add some enhancements.
  • If your words are extremely important, put the
    words and title together.
  • Title formulas can help in designing an amazing
    page!

CREATE VARIETY WITH TITLES
  • Find unique ways to deliver your title.
  • Look at professional designs carefully to see how
graphic artists work with letters in design
they often use many sizes and typefaces within
    one message.
  • The change in shape creates movement and interest
    for the reader.
  • Look at the words that make up your title, and
think about how you can make one word smaller or
    larger than the others.
  • Mix letter sizes and styles, use prepared
phrases, rubber stamps, your handwriting, or just
change the computer font every time you type a
    new word.

9
CREATE CONTRAST WITH TITLES
  • Design thrives on contrast
  • Create contrast in size, shape, or color.
  • Look at the letters of your title the way a
publisher would and do something different to the
    first letter.
  • Use positive and negative components in your
    lettering applications.
  • Give letters special attention with single,
    double or triple matting.
  • Use a square in your titles, the clean lines and
the sharp angles create great contrast for a
title. Round a corner or two to create depth in
    the contrast of a title.

10
CREATE RHYTHM WITH TITLES
  • Keep in mind that titles do not have to dominate
    the design.
  • Sometimes, you need to tuck the title into the
    design.
  • Let your photographs tell the story and the title
    support the photographs.
  • Challenge yourself to use rhythm and repeat
    colors, shapes or textures.
  • Let your creativity flow so that each aspect of
your page pulls together to tell its part of the
    whole story.

11
CREATE UNITY WITH TITLES
  • Enhance the unity by integrating elements of your
    design into your titles.
  • Use prepared words or titles, such as stickers,
    rub-ons or dimensional alphabet stickers.
  • Do the unexpected and replace a letter with a
design element this will not only create rhythm,
but also create unity between the title and the
    page elements.
  • Creating unity will help to
  • Balance the page
  • Create a design triangle
  • Unify the title with the page
  • Prepared titles like Jolees Boutique Title
Waves and Word Play designs come in a
predetermined shape dont be afraid to cut them
apart and change their look it is your design
    personalize it!

12
CREATE MOVEMENT WITH TITLES
  • Let your title be flexible!
  • Use the elements of your design and place letters
to follow a curve, around corners, or along the
edge of the page or photograph.
  • Movement in design is interesting and fun to look
at try a playful approach to your titles and
try something different you really will be
    happy with the results.

13
BASIC STICKER TECHNIQUES
  • Placing Stickers
  • Be careful not to tear your stickers!
  • Some stickers are not die cut, remove the backing
paper from the sticker so that you can freely use
your stickers or put them back on the release
    sheet.
  • Use the Tweezer Bee for precision placement
  • Cutting Stickers
  • Trim you stickers on the release paper
  • Lift the wanted portion of the sticker from the
    release paper.
  • Altering Stickers
  • Paints, Sandpaper, inks, and textile markers can
be used to alter stickers to better coordinate
    with a project.

14
CREATE FOCUS WITH STICKERS
  • When placing stickers, they need to be grounded
    or they will float.
  • Grounding a sticker means giving the sticker a
specific place or purpose in the layout design.
  • Attaching stickers to mats, titles, and within
borders with purpose in mind will help you be
    pleased with the results.

15
CREATE DEPTH WITH STICKERS
  • Look at a module of stickers and consider how
those images can interact with one another.
  • Many modules are designed with this purpose in
    mind.
  • Use recycled sticker paper to build your layers
enabling an easier transfer to the final project.

16
CREATE VARIETY WITH STICKERS
  • Stickers are available in a large variety of
    mediums.
  • Mix materials from different sticker sheets.
  • Make sure the stickers blend through theme,
color, shape, or imagery and create a sticker
    collage.
  • There are no rules to creating a sticker collage,
but always keep in mind, less is more.

17
CREATE MOVEMENT WITH STICKERS
  • Utilize border stickers to enhance the focal
points of a design or create movement through the
use of line in a design.
  • You can place a border sticker in the middle,
top, bottom or side of a design.
  • Pick your spot where you would like line in your
design and then have fun decorating.
  • When you are feeling stumped for a design this
is a good solution to a creative block!

18
CREATE DIMENSION WITH STICKERS
  • Use 3D-Dots Foam Adhesive to add dimension to
    your sticker creations.
  • Lift one or two elements from a primary design to
draw attention and interest to the sticker.

19
PUNCH FUNDAMENTALS
  • Punch Maintenance
  • Punches are a tool and will benefit from
maintenance to keep them operating at top
    performance.
  • Over time, metal burs may form along the metal
part of the punch in order to sharpen those
burrs away you need to punch aluminum foil.
  • Next, you need to lubricate the punch punch
with waxed paper to get a smooth action.
  • You can also drop a few drops of lubricant into
the mechanism of the punch this will keep the
    inner workings moving smoothly.

20
PUNCH FUNDAMENTALS
  • Adhering Punched Pieces
  • When working with punches, you will find that you
are frequently dealing with very small punched
    pieces.
  • If you attempt to put glue on the tiny pieces,
you will end up with very sticky fingers!
  • A better method is to apply glue to the
foundation piece, which is your largest surface.
  • With craft tweezers, pick up the tiny punched
pieces and lay them into the glue. This keeps
your hands clean and makes punch assembly a
    little easier.

21
PUNCH FUNDAMENTALS
  • Altering Punched Pieces
  • Feel free to pick up your Honey Bee Scissors or
craft knife and make a change!
  • Think of your punches as more than just a
specific shape, their use and application will go
    much farther.
  • Punch Storage and Inventory
  • Create a notebook or folder that you adhere your
    punched pieces into.
  • This will help you keep track of your punch
    inventory.

22
PUNCH STYLES
  • There are a variety of punch styles available.
  • Know the purpose and best uses for each style to
    understand what results to expect.
  • So, lets do a review of a variety of punches
  • Paper Shapers punches available in 4 sizes
with repetition in shapes that offer
    opportunities in layering punch shapes
  • These punches are best operated by flipping them
    over and punching.

23
PUNCH STYLES
  • EK Success medium and edge punches
  • Punch the perfect shape every time with these
    amazing punches.
  • These slim, lightweight and compact punches are
easily stored and simple to use.
  • Unlock the button on the back, punch your shape,
lock the punch, stack and store.

24
PUNCH STYLES
  • Buckle Punches
  • Paper Shapers buckle punches create a shape with
slots for easy threading of ribbon, fibers or
    paper strips.
  • Double Punches
  • Paper Shapers Double punches are really two
punches in one. Each double punch produces a
    shape with die-cut details.
  • In many cases, you can use the positive and
negative punched out pieces to make some really
    cool designs.

25
CREATE CONTRAST WITH PUNCHES
  • Punches create positive negative images when
    they punch thru paper
  • The positive image is the resulting punched
    piece.
  • The negative image is the empty space left in the
    paper.
  • Both the positive and negative images can be used
    in punch art.
  • The multiple uses of a punch give your creative
    flexibility with just one tool

26
CREATE DIMENSION WITH PUNCHES
  • Combine and layer punches for added depth and
dimension on page accent pieces and punched
    images.
  • Punch shapes from all your paper scraps including
printed papers, which give your shapes more
    dimension and character.
  • Use a single punch design in several colors or
patterns as a great enhancement to any page.
  • Trim and layer your punched images and accent
    them with additional punched pieces.
  • Make your punched art really pop by adhering the
pieces to the page with 3D-Dots foam adhesive.

27
CREATE SHAPE WITH PUNCHES
  • When creating punch art, challenge yourself to
    think outside of the box.
  • Dont just look at the punch as the intended
    shape.
  • Rather consider each punch shape as a building
block to developing a more intricate page
    element.
  • Start your punch collection with basic geometric
shapes, circles, squares, diamonds, hearts and
    stars.

28
CREATE DEPTH WITH PUNCHES
  • Increase the depth of an otherwise flat shape
through the use of color and shading techniques.
  • create depth with punches
  • Experiment with a variety of application methods
to develop your individual style and to increase
the detail in your punched designs
  • Apply chalk
  • Stamp then punch
  • Distress the paper, chalk or ink then punch for
    an aged or leather look
  • Add pen work to punches

29
CREATE MOVEMENT WITH PUNCHES
  • In the same way a frame completes a picture, a
border of punched pieces can enhance and complete
    a scrapbook page.
  • Guide the readers eye right from the title,
through the page elements and off the page.
  • This is a very simple, but powerful use of shape
and color that has a strong impact and unifies
all of the page elements into a beautiful design.

30
CREATE CORNERS WITH PUNCHES
  • One of the most unique aspects of a punch is its
ability to functionally change the corner of a
    piece of paper.
  • It is amazing how such a simple punch can make a
big difference on a journal block, photo, border
    or page accent.
