Title: Periodic Trends

1
Periodic Trends
  • To insert your company logo on this slide
  • From the Insert Menu
  • Select Picture
  • Locate your logo file
  • Click OK
  • To resize the logo
  • Click anywhere inside the logo. The boxes that
appear outside the logo are known as resize
    handles.
  • Use these to resize the object.
  • If you hold down the shift key before using the
resize handles, you will maintain the proportions
of the object you wish to resize.
  • Mr. Chan
  • Northwestern University

2
Day 34 (B-day)
  • Discuss Tests (0-10)
  • Warmup (10-15) configurations for O and Si
  • Organization of Periodic Table (15-25)
  • Introduction of Research project (25-35)
  • Coloring Periodic Table (25-35)
  • Review/Summary

3
Development of Periodic Table
  • Show Mendeleev original periodic table
  • Periodic Law
  • Periodic pattern in their physical and chemical
    properties
  • Originally ordered in increasing atomic mass, now
    increasing atomic number

4
How Periodic Table is Periodic
  • Periods, groups
  • How are electron configurations related in the
    periodic table?
  • Noble gases
  • All configurations end in s2 or p6
  • Outermost s and p sublevels filled
  • Representative elements
  • All end in s or p
  • Only partially filled
  • Alkaline metals
  • Alkaline earth metals
  • Halogens
  • Transition metals
  • All end d or f (inner transition)
  • Groups of elements end in same configurations

5
Day 35 Substitute
  • 0-43 Mendeleev Solitaire
  • 0-43 Rough Science Video

6
Day 36 Comp.Lab
  • 0-43 Elements Necessary for Life

7
Day 37 Comp. Lab
  • 0-43 Elements Necessary for Life

8
Day 38 Substitute
  • 0-43 Periodic Trends Graphing
  • 0-43 Rough Science 2

9
Day 39
  • Halloween demos

10
Day 40
  • Warmup (0-5)
  • What configurations do the following groups have?
  • Alkali metals, Halogens
  • Periodic Trends (5-25)
  • Review activity on Friday graphing trends
  • Activity Think Pair Share (25-35)
  • Prelab (35-43)
  • Lab (0-43)

11
Warmup
  • What is the ending electron configuration for the
    following groups?
  • Alkali metals
  • Halogens

12
Periodic Trends
  • Recall meaning of terms periodic, trends
  • Show Powerpoint J.Weiner
  • Certain patterns exist in periodic table

13
Atomic Size (Atomic Radius)
  • Half the distance between nuclei of two like
atoms in diatomic molecule (Ex. Cl -- Cl)
  • Trends
  • Down group (increases)
  • Outermost orbital larger as you move downward
  • Shielding increases, but larger orbitals overcome
  • Across period (decreases)
  • More protons, electrons. Electrons pulled closer
    to nucleus

14
Ionic size
  • Cations (loss of electrons)
  • Always smaller, with increased attraction by the
    nucleus with less electrons
  • Anions (gain electrons)
  • Always larger, effective nuclear attraction is
    less with more electrons

15
Ionization Energy
  • Energy required to overcome the attraction of the
nuclear charge and remove an electron from a
    gaseous atom
  • Trends
  • Down group (decreases)
  • Size of atoms increases, outermost electron
farther from nucleus, easier to remove
  • Across period (increases)
  • Nuclear charge increasing, greater attraction of
    nucleus for electron
  • Discuss nuclear charge, shielding effect

16
Electronegativity
  • Tendency for atoms of element to attract
electrons when they are chemically combined
  • Trend
  • Down group (decreases)
  • Across period (increases)

17
Summary of Periodic Trends
  • Think Pair Share Summarize/show trends on blank
    periodic table

18
Lab Seeing a Trend in Person
  • Discover trend across a period and within a group
  • Chemical Reactivity and Solubility
  • Make connections to atomic size, ionization
    energy, electronegativity

19
Day 41
  • Computer Lab Research

20
Day 42
  • Presentations

21
Day 43
  • Review

22
Day 44
  • Quiz

23
Day 79
