the world a better place to live.
  • TRUSTWORTHINESS
  • RESPECT
  • RESPONSIBILITY
  • FAIRNESS
  • CARING
  • CITIZENSHIP

17
Discipline What ? Why?
  • Self-discipline is the control of ones own
    behavior.
  • Administrators believe that teachers can handle
disruptions and problems, and still teach
    effectively.
  • It is easier to control discipline if there is a
set of school norms that are expected and
    followed by everyone.

18
Discipline Strategies
  • Be specific Know what is expected and what
happens if it is not performed.
  • Think small and move gradually Start slow. It
is hard to change students who are allowed to
    misbehave over periods of time.
  • Start where the student is - Get to know the
students and win their respect then change their
    behavioral traits.
  • Be consistent Be fair and follow through with
    rules and consequences.
  • Negative attention Students misbehave because
they know they will get attention negatively from
    those with whom they wish.

19
Positive Discipline
  • Mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn.
  • Respect and Love for Children MUST come first.
  • The 3 Rs Recovery
  • Recognize (The student recognizes mistake).
  • Reconcile (The students apologizes.)
  • Resolve (The teacher and student work together to
    improve the problem.)

20
Positive Discipline
  • The FEELING behind what you do is more important
    than what you do.
  • Children listen to you only after you make them
feel that they can be heard.
  • Create a Cooling-off Period You can not solve
problems at the time of conflict.

21
Class Rules
  • Allow students to create their own rules for
    class.
  • Post the rules for everyone to see and know.
  • Go over the rules periodically, especially before
holidays, after holidays, and at the end of the
    year.
  • Hold periodic class meetings to discuss whether
    class rules are working.

22
Goals of Mistaken Behavior
  • Negative Attention I belong if I get attention.
  • Power I belong only if I can make myself
    belong.
  • Revenge I cant belong so I will
  • Inadequacy I cant belong so, I dont care.

23
Positive Interventions
  • Time-outs short in nature to discuss and create
    a plan to improve behavior.
  • Behavior Games- A tape is made with time
intervals throughout a class period. Give points
for so many minutes of good behavior to the
class. Reward at the end if the behavior improves
    day to day. Create teams.
  • Create contracts for behavior that are signed by
    parents.
  • Award Preferred Activity Time (PAT).

24
The 3Rs of Consequences
  • Relate Consequences to the Problem.
  • Create Respectful Consequences.
  • Create Reasonable Consequences.
  • If at all possible, allow students to set up
    their own consequences.

25
Sequence of Consequences
  • 3 Strike Rule and You are Out!
  • Sent to an administrator.
  • Parent Conference
  • Detention with teacher or administrator
  • In school and Out of School Suspension
  • Expulsion

26
Keeping Children First
  • My concern is not whats best for me.
  • Not what is in fashion or style.
  • I pledge to do with conscience free
  • Whats best for every child.
  • Even though the problems, programs, and people
    distract,
  • With eyes on the money purse.
  • I commit myself and my every act
  • To keeping children first.
