  • What is an outdoor education school?
  • Outdoor education school is a school in the
    outdoors teaching young kids about cultures and
    adventures. Also, it teaches kids about safety
    in the outdoors and learning new things about
    wildlife animals

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE COUNSELOR?
  • The top five reasons that counselors give for
    coming to Foothill Horizons Outdoor School
  • 1- Came to outdoor school in 6th grade.
  • 2- want job experience.
  • 3- Enjoy working with children.
  • 4- Asked by teacher/school counselor.
  • 5- Enjoy being outdoors.

WHAT ARE SIXTH GRADERS LIKE?
  • Sixth graders are growing rapidly and can be very
    different physically, emotionally, and mentally
    from each other. Three things that are true for
    most sixth graders are
  • they are 11 or 12 years old and very interested
    in new information they seek approval from
    peers, and benefit form good role models this is
    likely their first time away from home and family
    overnight.

YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION
  • DURING LESSONS Role model all behaviors expected
    of the students.
  • Help students to follow instruction.
  • Keep students focused on the lesson.
  • IN THE DORMS Supervise the students at all
    times.
  • Keep them safe physically and emotionally.
  • IN THE DINNING HALL Supervise a table of
    students
  • Model table manners
  • Focus the students on announcements and cleanup.

STEPS TO BE A COUNSELOR
  • ROP- The Foothill Horizons ROP (Regional
    Occupational Program) course is a fun way to earn
    credits toward your high school graduation.
    During the Saturday workshop you spend the day
    with other high school students learning how to
    be a leader that students will admire and trust.

WHAT YOU PRACTICE!
  • As a counselor youll get to practice what you
    learned during the ROP Training by
  • Supervising 6th grade students in the
    dormitories.
  • Acting as a teachers aide during hikes, including
    a field trip to Moaning Caverns and Calaveras Big
    Tree
  • Working with a team to provide a week of lifelong
    positive memories for 6th graders.

WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF IT!
  • You can earn up to 5 elective credits
  • Community service hours (if needed)
  • Transportation to and from Foothill Horizons.
  • All meals and lodging.
  • An evaluation in the form of a letter of
    reference.
  • Opportunity to work with experienced educators.
  • Experience as a leader to put on you resume.

WHEN ARE ROP CLASSES OFFERED
  • ROP classes are offered once a month throughout
    the year. Ask your school career counselor to
    help you sign up for one of the Saturday
    workshops.

    peoples children means putting their needs first.
  • Teachers and Foothill Horizons staff count on

HOW DO I WORK WITH SIXTH GRADERS?
  • Many high school students and even graduates come
    back again and again to be a counselor at
    Foothill Horizon. Here are what our most
    experienced counselors think are important parts
    of the job.
  • - Establishing yourself as a responsible adult
    rather than just their friend.
  • - Keeping them focused on positive activities so
    they stay out of trouble.
  • -Catching the students being good.
  • - Showing ENTHUSIASM and a positive attitude at
    all times
  • SIXTH GRADERS HAVE LOTS OF ENERGY AND NEED

  • 1. Before going anywhere always COUNT your
    students. Try a COUNT OFF
  • 2. Counselors ALWAYS stay at the FRONT of the
    line.
  • 3. Limit the number of kids out of your direct
    supervision eg., BATHROOMS HEALTH OFFICE.
  • 4. Students are never sent back to the dorm ALONE.

  • Counselors should prepare for hiking and outdoor
    activities that include crawling through caves
    and sitting on the bare ground.
  • COUNSELORS follow these guidelines.
  • Clothing must cover the shoulders and
    undergarments at all times
  • Shorts must be at least fingertip length
  • Hats or visors are worn with the bill facing
    forward only

THESE ARE NOT ALLOWED
  • Clothing styles associated with gangs.
  • Baggy pants
  • Wallet chains
  • Tank tops or low cut, revealing tops. Tops that
    reveals the stomach or lower back.
  • Clothing or gear that has offensive or obscene
    writing or images, references to drugs, sex, or
    advertising for alcohol or tobacco.

WHAT TO BRING!
  • BEDDING sheets/blankets or a sleeping bag, and a
    pillow
  • CLOTHING socks, t-shirt, shorts, long pants, and
    belt, jacket or sweatshirt, shoes/hiking boots,
    sandal and pajamas for dorms only, rain coat.
  • EQUIPMENT watch, camera, musical instrument,
    water bottle, sunscreen/chap stick.
  • TOILETRY toothbrush and tooth paste, comb or
    brush, soap/shampoo, towel, washcloth

WHAT NOT TO BRING
  • Hair dryers or curling irons
  • Radios , tape players, CD players, electronic
    games, cell phones or pagers.
  • Any tobacco, alcohol, or illegal substances
  • Knives
  • AND
  • Do not bring money or valuables.
