Title: Telecommunications Engineering

1
Telecommunications Engineering
  • Introduction to course SYSC 4700
  • Engineering principles for the design, evolution,
    operation and management of telecommunication
    networks and systems.

2
Networks
  • Means for interconnecting sources and
    destinations of information
  • Examples
  • Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)
  • The internet
  • CATV networks
  • Ad hoc networks
  • Sensor networks
  • Private in-house networks
  • LANs
  • Internal telephone networks

3
Course Content
  • Network overview
  • Basic principles of network components
  • information, telephone systems, transmission
    media, access, multiplexing, switching,
    synchronization, signalling, video compression
  • Network design and evolution
  • Standards, planning, teletraffic, wireless,
broadband ATM, the internet, optical networks,
    multihop networks, network evolution
  • Network operation, security
  • Network management and control, CO visit, INOC
    visit
  • Political and business aspects
  • Economic/financial analysis, federal
    telecommunications policy, CRTC regulation

4
Lecture Team
  • University
  • Industry
  • Alcatel
  • Bell Canada
  • Cisco
  • Mitel
  • Nortel
  • Softwright
  • ThinkRF
  • Shape Innovations
  • Government
  • CRC (Communications Research Centre of Canada)
  • CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and
    Telecommunications Commission).
  • Correctional Service of Canada

5
The Course
  • Broader than most other courses youve had.
  • It gives you the Big Picture.
  • Follows from earlier courses, notably
  • SYSC3501 Communication Theory or SYSC3503 Comm
    Theory II
  • SYSC4602 Computer Communications
  • Supplements other courses (such as SYSC4600
    Digital Communications).
  • Will be useful in career planning. Many
engineering and computer science careers are
related directly or indirectly to the
    telecommunications industry.
  • prerequisites

6
Important Points
  • Attend all the lectures.
  • Ask questions - most of the lecturers are from
industry or government. They will expect and
appreciate questions, even more than professors
    do.
  • There will be many acronyms. If you dont know
    them, ASK!
  • Put effort into doing the assignments and the
    project.
  • Participate in the INOC (International Network
    Operations Centre) visit.
  • Make use of the course textbook, the 3-volume
    text Telecommunications Mosaic (available from
the Library reserve desk), and other course
references, such as issues of IEEE Communications
    Magazine.

7
Central Office and INOC Visits(subject to final
arrangements)
  • Sign up for one CO visit (compulsory)
  • (on sheet posted on door of Room 7032MC, after
    Jan. 17.)
  • Sign up early in the term. Only a limited number
    (10) can be accommodated on each visit, so sign
up early to get the time you want.
  • Write clearly (the CO must know in advance who is
    coming).
  • Arrive at the CO at 1501 OConnor on time.
Otherwise you will not be admitted. The tour will
    last 1 1/2 to 2 hr.
  • See the visit rules in the handout.
  • Likewise, choose and sign up for a visit to the
INOC (International Network Operations Centre) on
Saturday, March 29. A separate signup sheet will
    be posted.

8
Mechanics
  • Copies of lecturers overheads are available on
    the web site.
  • Reference book available from the Library
    reserve desk.
  • Several assignments.
  • Group project to be announced.
  • Laboratory periods will be used for CO visits.
  • Midterm exam (closed book, in class) scheduled on
    Thursday, February 14.
