- Establishes credibility of the prevention
profession - Establishes and recognizes the basic standards of
professional competence - Provides standards for evaluation of those
seeking employment in the field - Sets the prevention professional apart from their
peers - Gives a sense of accomplishment

- Ensure programs are being led by quality,
professionally trained people who maintain the
highest ethical standards and are well trained in
evidenced-based practices - Accountability of public funds
- Ensure populations are well-served
- Stay abreast of the current trends in the field
4PREVENTION CERTIFICATION PROCESS
- Attain the required educational and experience
requirements - Obtain application and portfolio for 35.00 from
MAAP - Complete the portfolio
- Make a copy of your portfolio and send it to MAAP
with 150.00 - Your portfolio must be approved before you are
allowed to take the exam
5PREVENTION CERTIFICATION PROCESS
- Notify MAAP 45 days before the next scheduled
testing date in which you wish to take the exam - Review prevention materials and study!
- Take the exam
- Pass the exam
- Become certified
6Certification Requirements
- NON-RECIPROCAL ICRC LEVEL
- Associate Prevention Specialist (APS)
- One year (2000 hours) or 240 direct service hours
of experience in prevention - 75 hours of prevention education/training (50 of
this must be in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug
abuse training) - High school diploma or GED
- Supervisor(s) evaluations
- Two (2) colleague evaluations
- Signed Code of Ethics and Release
- Must be supervised by CPS or CPM for one year
- Eight (8) hours of AIDS education
- Six (6) hours of Prevention Ethics
- Four (4) hours of Disruptive Audience Behavior

- ICRC RECIPROCAL LEVELS (CPS)
- Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS)
- Two (2) years experience in prevention
- 150 hours of prevention education/training (50
of this must be in alcohol, tobacco, and other
drug abuse training) - Bachelors degree
- Supervisors evaluations
- Three (3) colleague evaluations
- Signed Code of Ethics and Release
- 120 hours of supervised practical experience
(minimum ten hours in each of the five (5)
performance domains) - Eight (8) hours of AIDS education
- Six (6) hours of Prevention Ethics
- Four (4) hours of Disruptive Audience Behavior
Education - Passing score ICRC Prevention Written Exam
8Certification Requirements
- ICRC RECIPROCAL LEVELS (CPM)
- Certified Prevention Manager (CPM)
- Same as CPS, plus three (3) years of
managerial/supervisory experience in substance
abuse prevention.
9The Portfolio
- Submit portfolio including documentation of
training - 35.00 to obtain portfolio
- Must be approved by MAAP
- 1 year from approval to complete certification
process - 150.00 portfolio processing fee
- Colleague and supervisor evaluation mailed
directly to MAAP - Official transcript from college or university
mailed directly to MAAP
