Beginning Your Magazine
  • Choose your Software Program
  • Microsoft Word is a good program for basic
    editing and simple layouts
  • Microsoft Publisher, PageMaker, and Broderbund
Print Shop are good programs for creating
different layouts and viewing magazine type
    layouts
  • Today we will be using Microsoft Publisher

6
Open Publisher
  • Select Publisher from the Start menu.
  • We will be creating the following elements in our
    magazine
  • Title Page
  • Inserting Stories
  • Inserting Pictures
  • Creating a Table of Contents

7
Choosing a Style
  • Enter a Title for your Magazine.
  • Select a new publication and choose the
Newsletter design. There are several styles in
each design type. Choose the one you like the
    best.
  • The program will automatically create 4 pages for
    your newsletter.
  • A front cover, two inside pages, and a back
    cover.

8
Modifying the Print Style
  • You can customize the Newsletter design by
choosing different color schemes and font
    schemes.
  • Remember to use colors and fonts that will be eye
catching, but dont forget to make it easy to
    read.

9
The Title Page
  • Select the Newsletter Title and change it to the
    title of your magazine.
  • Change the Newsletter Date.
  • The left side of the page contains the titles of
each story and the page it is on. Normally you
will fill this in after you have finished your
    stories.

10
Editing the Document
  • Now it is time to begin filling in the stories.
  • Edit the second story title and begin writing
    about it.
  • For today make the title, My Favorite 4-H
project is _______ and type in whatever your
    favorite is.
  • For today just type a couple of sentences in the
    story.

11
Editing and Adding New Pictures
  • The Newsletter design places pictures in some of
the stories. We will first change the picture
that is already there and then add a new picture.
  • Right click on the picture in the First Story
Headline and choose Change Picture. If you had
your own pictures you could choose From file or
    Scanner.
  • Today we will choose from Clip Art and pick
    another picture.

12
Editing and Adding New Pictures
  • Notice if the size of the picture changed then
    the text moved as well.
  • Now we will add a second picture.
  • Click on the text of the first story.
  • Select Insert from the top menu then Picture and
    Clip Art.
  • Chose a picture.

13
Editing and Adding New Pictures
  • Try moving the picture around the story. Notice
that the text adjusts automatically so you dont
    have to worry about that.

14
Adding Additional Pages
  • The Newsletter design creates 4 pages to start
with and we need at least 8.
  • To add the other 4 pages, select Insert and Page.
  • Publisher wants to add 2 pages at time for the
left and right sides of the page.
  • Publisher will create the new pages before the
    last page of the newsletter.
  • You can choose the type of page you want.
  • Create the left side as stories and the right as
    a calendar.

15
The Back Page
  • The back page of a magazine or newsletter usually
contains information about the organization, or
in this case, the person writing the article.
  • Add your name and address to the first section on
    this page.
  • The second area can be filled in with information
about yourself, like why you joined this project.

16
Finishing Up
  • Once all of the stories have been written, add
the titles to the left hand side of the front
    page.
  • You dont have to add all of the story titles to
the front page. A lot of magazines add only their
top 5 stories to the front page to grab peoples
    attention.
