5 Elements of Creative
  • Show vs. Tell
  • Show me dont tell me! Show me what is going on
    inside.
  • How
  • Flush the Adjective By definition adjective
tellsold woman, tall building, scary movie
  • Examples
  • The man looked suspicious
  • The brim of his hat hung low over his eyes. The
man walked quickly hastening a glance behind him
every so often, in search of a follower that did
    not exist.

2. Vivid Language The verb shows what is
happening. It is King! Use active verbs not
passive verbs. Active verbs ran, jumped,
glanced, etc. Passive verbs is, am, was, were,
saw, go, walk, etc. Examples I grasped the
corner of the roof, and dangled my feet until
they reached the wooden fence. I trudged into
the 7/11 and out of the excruciating heat.

3. Sensory vs. Sense Sense words are telling
words. They are DEAD! Do not use them. Examples
I heard the seagulls. The call of the seagulls
filled the morning air. He saw the bully. Fear
poured into Davids eyes as he slowly looked up
and at the bullys face.

4. Variety of Sentence Structure Word create
music and music has a beat. Dont start your
sentences the same way. Show some variety. Try
starting with words that end in ly, ing, or
start with a prepositional phrase. Examples Panic
king, my fingers raced to the panels of
buttons. Quickly, I raced into the building. Past
the door I noticed a dog lying on the
floor. Hesitants These are words that make you
wait to get to the good part. Dont use
them Examples suddenly, after, when, as I, as
if, etc.

5. Boundary Breakers This is abstract thought. It
is going beyond the red circle. Create images
that are new ways of looking at
things. Examples Water crashed at my feet its
hands reach out and pull me along the sand. The
wild roses glanced and grinned at me like I was
one of them planted in the ground.
6
Roller Coaster Sitting, feet dangling from my
seat, I wait for a thrill to start. With a black
snake around my neck the car jerked from a
stopped position, the floor lowered, and I
started to rise, slanting, but rising. Down the
biggest drop on the thrill and around a loop, my
feet swung above my head. Falling down drops and
twisting around loops, we dove almost
underground, where ten little piggies almost got
their heads cut off. Tightly curling, the ride
came to a stop, the floor raised my feet touched
ground. Batmans mission, over.

I Left My Heart in Gotham City Clank, clank,
clank, horizontally poised in my seat, the roller
coaster cart climbed its way up the towering
metal mountain. Trapped in terror, motionless, my
heart leaped. Gasping for a brief breath, wind
hit me with such force my head shot back into my
chairs headrest. Darting downhill, the hissing
of the wind stung at me each time we passed a
tree. Boom! Plunging into another turn, the world
flickered upside-down and up again. Reeek!
Silence and stillness shuddered throughout my
heart-stricken body. Removed from by seatbelt, I
sat clueless, the wind knocked the breath out of
me parched dryness drained the moisture that
lingered before, and my rose-scented perfume
returned faintly in the air.
