Activity
  • What have been some of the challenges you have
faced with sustaining your programs and/or
    funding?
  • What are some of the strategies can you or do you
use to deal with the challenges?

11
Know the Funding Source
  • Some institutional funders (foundations,
    businesses, associations, and government)
  • provide ongoing general operating support
  • provide grants only for programs
  • some will never make capital grants
  • some will consider all of the above.

12
Know the Funding Source
  • Some institutional funders (foundations,
    businesses, associations, and government)
  • - focus on a few charitable areas,
  • arts
  • neighborhood development,
  • youth services,
  • Education
  • protecting the environment,
  • human rights advocacy.

13
Know the Funding Source
  • Most funders have written guidelines
  • what they will fund
  • how you can apply for grants.
  • issue annual reports, which generally list actual
    grants.
  • Individual donors who respond favorably to what
youre doing and who you serve are usually a good
source of funds for general operating support.

14
Know the Funding Source
  • Devise your strategy
  • see yourself as funders may.
  • Place yourself in the position of those with the
    money to give
  • review what you are telling potential funders
about your organization and its programs.
  • Do your homework, so that your time and resources
are focused on funders most likely to be
    interested in your programs

15
  • Know the Funding Source
  • Be sure that your project is a good match with
    the funding source.
  • Your proposal must be congruent with the
grantors priorities (not the other way around).
  • Dont waste your time or the funders time with a
proposal that is not a good match.

16
  • Verify Available Funding
  • Verify funding is still available.
  • Identify timelines for grant awards.
  • Double-check your timeline to verify award
    schedules meet your needs.
  • Be realistic in the amount you ask for and at
maximum ask only for the amount they are willing
    to fund.

17
  • Read the Application Guidelines
  • Most grantors provide details on how and when to
submit proposals, and also identify what the
    proposal must contain.
  • Read the guidelines before you start, read them
during the process read them when you finish.
Follow them to the last detail.

18
  • Pay Attention to Format
  • Use bold type to emphasize key words.
  • Include page numbers.
  • Use ragged right margins.
  • Use white space for easy reading.

19
  • Be Clear and Concise
  • Present your ideas in a precise, easy to
    understand style.
  • Be succinct.
  • Avoid acronyms if they are not widely understood.

20
  • Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
  • Is this enough said?
  • Spelling and grammar errors are not acceptable!!!
  • Inaccurate content is not acceptable!!!
  • When finished with your proposal, let it settle,
    then proofread.
  • Get someone unfamiliar with the field to
    proofread.

21
  • Convey Your Willingness to Collaborate
  • Share your history of success with collaboration
in the past and your willingness to collaborate
