Registration
  • Goal How to promote our class without offending
    the Social Studies Department
  • Simple Solution Divide all registrants between
    the two departments
  • Gives lots of flexibility to buildings with
    regards to FTEs from year to year

    subject matter, class is limited to juniors and
    seniors

Mapping the Standard
  • Meetings with both Social Studies and Business
  • 58 Benchmarks to meet
  • Debated the following to fit in the entire
    standard
  • 2 classes (one macro/one micro)
  • Make macro required/micro elective
  • Have the class be a semester long
  • Due to scheduling issues, course was scheduled to
    be one class, one term

  • Organized the benchmarks into an appropriate
    curriculum map

  • Discussed how we were going to cover all the
    benchmarks in 9 weeks.
  • Needed to make sure we assessed these benchmarks
    to meet the state requirements
  • Discussed course layout, projects, and assessments

Curriculum Ideas
  • Stranded
  • Used as a fun project when discussing scarcity
  • Divide class into groups of three or four
  • A typical weekend cruise gone awry. The ship
    sinks and you are afloat for 2.5 days.
  • Students draw from a random list of tools and
    supplies they took from the ship before it sank
  • Examples raft, knife, binoculars, spoon,
    plastic bottle, etc. Each group will get a
    different list
  • Using scarce resources, students will develop a
    survival plan

  • Do the following
  • Research the different types of businesses that
    are in the business/shopping district
  • What goods and services are provided by these
    businesses
  • Why do you suppose the owners chose their
    location
  • What are the costs and benefits of locating in
    that area
  • What other types of businesses would do well in
    that area
  • Present your findings in a Word or PowerPoint
    document

  • Franchise Project
  • Have students use the Internet to research
    various franchising opportunities
  • Franchise.org, and many others
  • Students have 250,000 of capital to invest
  • Students come up with 5-7 opportunities for their
    city
  • Describe Franchise attributes investment and
    fees, support, training, how many, locations
  • Students give final recommendation of their
    franchise and where in their community they would
    locate the business

  • Hand students a list of famous entrepreneurs
  • Have students research three entrepreneurs and
    answer the following questions
  • Entrepreneurs name
  • Company and Product name
  • Year company started
  • How did they get their idea/ How did their
    business start
  • What is the business doing today
  • Describe what an entrepreneur is
  • How do entrepreneurs impact our economy
