Who is Jane Goodall?
  • She has extensively researched chimpanzees and
    frequently campaigns for animal rights.
  • Author of over twenty books. Writes for both
    children and adults.
  • Multiple Honorary Degrees from various schools.
    USCs department of anthropology named after her.
  • Has had many theories relating to development and
    distinction of human beings based on her research.

Background Biographical Info
  • Childhood attachment to monkeys
  • Parents divorced at age 12, moved to Bournemouth
    with mother, where she met Sir David Attenborough
  • Anthropologist Louis Leakey noticed her
    fascination with animals and hired her as an
    assistant.
  • Leakey gave Goodall her first chance to study
    chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park
  • Afterwards, she returned to Cambridge to receive
    her degree in ethology in 1964
  • Was married twice, once in 1964 and again in 1975

Information on Chimpanzees
  • The Chimpanzee is found in west and Central
    Africa
  • The males are 75-155 lbs, and range from 3-4 feet
    tall. Female chimpanzees are about 57-110 lbs,
    and range from 2-3½ feet tall.
  • Chimpanzees, by comparison to humans, are
    incredibly strong.
  • Chimpanzees are known to base their society off
    an alpha male hunting system, and form clans
    based on relatives.

Trials and Tribulations
  • One of first women anthropologists
  • Chimpanzees were not receptive
  • Had no credibility at first
  • Second husband died

Criticism
  • Groups have stated that her use of feeding
    stations influenced chimpanzee behavior
  • Her response is that the feeding stations only
    amplified, but did not actually change the nature
    of chimp behavior.

  • Is the head of Advocates for Animals, an animal
    advocacy group based in Edinborough
  • Travels over 300 days a year.
