  • Born on March 22, 1868 in Morrison, Illinois
  • His dad, Silas Franklin, was a reverend and his
    mothers name was Mary Jane Andrews
  • Grandparents were pioneers before 1750
  • Court reporter then went to Oberlin College in
    Ohio in 1886
  • Graduated and taught post elementary school
    physics
  • Appointed Fellow in Physics at Colombia
    University in 1893
  • Received PhD in 1895 for research on the
    polarization of light by incandescent surfaces
    using molten gold and silver at the U.S. Mint
  • Became assistant of Ryerson Lab at the University
    of Chicago, became professor there from
    1910-1921, and simplified teaching physics

  • Found the amount of charge carried by an electron
    using the elegant falling drop method in 1909
