6Extenuating circumstances if there are
extenuating circumstances that have affected
your work in the third year, or during the
examinations, it is vital that you inform
Kathryn Rowlinson by 30th May a pre-meeting of
the Board of Examiners is held to discuss
extenuating circumstances and a record is placed
on the final spreadsheet used to assess
candidates although the pre-meeting must
necessarily discuss candidates by name, the
record of extenuating circumstances appears on
the spreadsheet only by candidate
code remember, all cases of extenuating
circumstances must be fully supported by
evidence (doctor's notes, etc.)
7Vivas each student seen by a Visiting Examiner
or by a senior member of staff of the Biology
Department (another member of staff is always
present, usually to keep a record of any points
that need to be brought to the attention of the
Board of Examiners) the list of viva times will
be posted on 4th June vivas are on 5th
June the list will be by candidate code, not by
name Visiting Examiners will see a selection of
candidates from each degree Class and also some
borderline candidates vivas often revolve around
discussion of your project in vivas, there is a
chance to discuss difficulties, as well as
positive impressions of the three years you are
likely to be asked about your future
ambitions the viva is not an examination and
carries no grade
8Board of Examiners I all students are discussed
by candidate code - this ensures anonymity the
master mark sheet is compiled giving an overall
grade mark G which is 1G1 3G2 5G3/9 G1
is based on the best 3 cu, G2 on the best 3.5 cu,
G3 on all 4 cu all students with 11 cu passed
will be awarded an Honours degree all students
with 10 cu passed, but less that 11 cu, will be
awarded a Pass degree intercalated students
have G calculated from 1G1 1G2 4G3/6 G1
and G2 are based on MBBS examinations, G3 on all
4 cu in Biology
9Board of Examiners II performance of students in
First Class and at borderlines (68-72, 58-62,
48-52 if full complement of units taken) is
discussed in detail by the Board no student is
ever demoted but it is possible to be promoted to
a higher Class comments from vivas are useful at
this point mark profile is examined good
progress noted marks in third year examined
carefully to see spread did some courses have
low grades overall?
10Posting of provisional results provisional
Class results will be posted outside the Biology
Department office after the meeting of the Board
of Examiners on 6th June please note that
results will be given by candidate code
