8START is an effective tool used to sort the
priorities of treatment.
Definition
- Initial assessment of each patient is
accomplished within 30 seconds.
- Initial treatment is limited to life-threatening
conditions (i.e. opening an airway and
controlling severe bleeding).

- Do the greatest good for greatest number.
- To best match patients needs with available
resources.
The first arriving emergency medical team can
initiate START.

- The ONLY care that you provide during START is
for red patients. It includes - Establish an airway
