  • In FY 2000 alone, we worked with more than 183
    partners to implement well over 190 projects with
    the help of 493 volunteers conducting a wide
    array of programs and activities from school
    programs to historic renovation.

    students from the region in hands on learning and
    community service.

Appalachia CARES
  • Appalachia CARES (formerly AmeriCARES) promotes
    Community, Action, Responsibility, Education and
    Service as program cornerstones through a program
    of service learning.
  • The goal is to integrate academic learning with
    meaningful community service

  • Student teachers being trained and utilizing
    service-learning teaching model in a
    comprehensive classroom setting.

  • 3,077 students involved in a program of
    service-learning
  • 162 student-initiated service-learning projects
    completed that meet real community needs

  • 180 volunteers served 680 hours helping with
    student service-learning projects

  • Enviro2000 120 teachers attend annual teacher
    in-service.
  • Envirothon Hancock High wins regional
    competition of 20 teams.

  • Clinch-Powell RCD providing financial management

Clinch-Powell Enterprise Community
  • The Clinch-Powell Enterprise Community was
    designated by Vice President Al Gore in January
    1999.
  • A short 20 months later, we can pinpoint 21
    million in new programming in the region based on
    the Enterprise Community assistance.

Tele-Democracy Network
  • A network of video conferencing centers in each
    county to allow up to 30 people at each site to
    participate in meetings.

  • The project is made possible with a direct
    360,000 grant from the Department of Commerce, a
    10,000 grant from the Kellogg Foundation and
    donated equipment from Sprint.

Economic Development Feasibility Studies
  • A grant from the U.S. Department of Health and
    Human Services is provided funding to conduct
    three economic development feasibility studies in
    the EC Region.
  • The studies include sustainable, value-added
    wood sustainable, value-added agriculture and
    heritage tourism.

Clinch-Powell Revolving Loan Fund
  • The Enterprise Community is establishing the
    Clinch-Powell Revolving Loan Fund in partnership
    with the First Century Bank and USDA Rural
    Development.
  • The fund will provide loans of up to 15,000 to
    entrepreneurs and expanding businesses in the
    Enterprise Community region.
