Outline
  • Introduction
  • JRF WAN/DMOC LAN Requirements
  • Joint Red Flag Data Protocols
  • Joint Red Flag LVC Merge Results
  • Requirements
  • Network Design
  • LVC Results
  • Conclusion

3
Introduction
  • Joint Red Flag (JRF) Multi-service Event
  • Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, SOF
  • Virtual Flag, Red Flag, Air Warrior, Roving
    Sands, and JSTE
  • Simulation Protocols
  • DIS, HLA, TENA, DMON Portal, NATO EX
  • Tactical Data Link Protocols
  • Link 16, IBS I, BFT, Hook 112
  • Complex Network design
  • Joined several WANs and simulation sites

4
JRF WAN Requirements
5
WANs used for LVC Merge
  • JTEN WAN connected to 505th EXS, 705th EXS
    (DMOC), Nellis CAOC, and JFCOM
  • Divided into 4 VLANs
  • Modeling and Simulation VLAN
  • Collaboration VLAN
  • C4I VLAN
  • Brief/Debrief VLAN
  • DMON connected to CAF DMO Sites and DMOC
  • Robbins AFB (VSTARS MTC)
  • Tinker AFB (AWACS MTC)
  • Eglin AFB (F-15C MTC)

Red Flag LVC Description
  • Joint STARS required for Red Flag training event
  • Provide ground tactical awareness picture to CAOC
  • Joint STARS unable to support due to scheduling
    issues
  • Virtual JSTARS proposed to support Red Flag event
  • Use Robbins AFB VSTARS MTC
  • Provide Red Flag ground picture to VSTARS MTC
  • VSTARS MTC provide ground tactical awareness
    picture to CAOC
  • To meet requirement, different modeling and
    simulation/transmission protocols would need to
    interact
  • Network design incorporated gateways for
    protocol/transmission conversion
  • DIS Filter/TACCSF Software Router

Software Router Capabilities Used
  • Support for all UDP-based broadcast data
  • DIS
  • NATO-EX
  • Video images
  • Free text messages
  • Voice over IP

JRF LVC Results
  • TENA/HLA Gateway converted range tracks to HLA
objects, then sent to DMOC over JTEN
  • DIS/HLA Gateway converted HLA objects to DIS
    Entity State PDUs
  • JCATS created additional ground clutter as Entity
    State PDUs
  • DMON Portal converted DIS Entity State PDUs to
DMON Protocol, then sent to Robbins AFB VSTARS
    over DMON
  • VSTARS MTC read in ground tracks, sent NATO EX
(MTI, FTI), using the TSR, and TADIL J to DMOC
    using Signal PDUs
  • TSR at DMOC sent NATO EX and TADIL J data to
    Nellis CAOC over JTEN
  • Nellis CAOC used simulated ground awareness for
    Red Flag training

16
Conclusions
  • JRF LVC merge successful
  • All training audiences met objectives
  • Live fly enhanced with Virtual and Constructive
    EGs
  • JRF Technical challenges overcome
  • Multiple simulation protocols used together
  • Multiple transmission protocols used
  • Multiple WANs joined together
  • Technical and Operational issues solved by team
    effort
