Title: TRACTORS

TRACTORS

  • Tractors
  • The first engine-powered farm tractors used
steam and were introduced in 1868. These engines
were built as small road locomotives, and were
operated by one man, if the engine weighed less
than 5 tons. They were used for general road
haulage and in particular by the timber trade.
The most popular steam tractor was the Garrett
    4CD.
  • There are a lot of types of tractors. Here are
all of the types that I found.
  • I am going to do my power point on the CASE
    tractor.

  • The case tractor has changed over the years.
The earlier models had no cab. Todays machines
have air-conditioning. Present models have 12
wheels (4 wheel drive) and G.P.S. This was never
heard of in the early years.

  • The J.I. Case Corporation was founded by Jerome
Increase Case in 1847. The company built
threshers. Case began manufacturing steam engines
in 1869 and introduced its first steam traction
engine in 1878. The company was well known steam
tractors and threshers. In 1964, Tenneco a large
Oil and Energy company purchased J.I. Case. In
1972, Case became the big tractor power
specialist company when it began only producing
tractors on the Ag side of its operations. Case
became well known for its Traction King 4wds and
high horse power row crop tractors. In 1985 J.I.
Case became a full line company again, when its
parent company merged it with International
    Harvester to form Case International.

  • In 1924, IH started a revolution in tractor
design with the introduction of the Farmall. The
Farmall was the first tricycle style row-crop
tractor. Farmall tractors not only plowed, but
were capable of precision work such as
cultivating. The Farmall name is legendary and
associated with historic models like the M.
  • IH used the Farmall name on its tractor line
    through 1974.
  • The company was always innovating new
    machinery. IH developed the revolutionary
Cylco-Air planter and  Axial-Flow single rotor
combine in the 1970s. The 22 and a front flow
air cool tractor line with tri-six shifting  were
    big hits in the 1980s.

  • The International Harvester Company was formed
by the merger of the McCormick Harvesting Machine
Company and the Deering Harvester Company on
    August 12, 1902.  In 1924, IH started a
revolution in tractor design with the
introduction of the Farmall. The Farmall was the
first tricycle style row-crop tractor. Farmall
tractors not only plowed, but were capable of
precision work such as cultivating. The Farmall
name is legendary and associated with historic
models like the M.  IH used the Farmall name on
its tractor line through 1974.  The company was
always innovating new machinery. IH developed the
    revolutionary Cylco-Air planter and  Axial-Flow
single rotor combine in the 1970s. The 22 and a
front flow air cool tractor line with tri-six
shifting  were big hits in the 1980s.
International Harvester fell on hard times during
the poor Ag economy in the mid-1980's and  sold
its agricultural division Tenneco.  The IH ag
line merged with  J. I. Case a Tenneco company in
1985.  The last IH tractor to roll off the
assembly line bearing the International name was
    on May 14, 1985 with the 5488 designation.  IH's
combines and equipment are still manufactured
    under the Case IH name.

  • Case IH continues to provide products that
satisfy farmers needs with the strong line of
tractors. The MXM Series replaces the Maxxum line
in 2002.  By combining superb power, performance,
durability and comfort into each tractor, the
innovative MXM platform enables operators to work
more productively and more profitably. Whether a
farm grows corn and soybeans, small grains or
specialty crops, these tractors will help
operators get more out of every hour. With
    tractors from 100 to 190 horsepower, there's a
MXM Series tractor for every farm. Superior
maneuverability and performance make the MXM
deluxe tractors ideal for livestock operations.
Plus, serious power and remarkable hydraulics
make the big MXM 145 and MXM 190 perfectly suited
    for tillage, planting and cultivating
applications. CIH will replace the C  and CX
series tractors with the JX and JUX line based
from FIAT designed tractors. The current MX
Magnum line will also be upgraded soon with more
horse power, a new draft sensing hitch that takes
the bumps out of field work and a new front end
suspension system unique to the Magnum line. The
new MX Magnum line will include the MX 210, 230,
255 and 285. In 4 years CaseIH may introduce a
310 to 320 hp Magnum that articulates between the
engine and cab like the 22.

  • When Tenneco began looking at IHC's
Agricultural Group in 1984, it was because its
J.I. Case subsidiary wanted combines, not the IH
tractor line. J.I. Case decided to focus on
producing high horse power tractors and dropped
its Combine and most of its implement line. The
last Case models produced in 1972 were the 1660
and 1665 Corn Special.Tenneco's decision to stop
Combine production was because their models were
10 years behind the competitors models technology
and RD funds could not be justified with
potential sales of a new model. Thirteen years
later Case returned to the combine market with
the newly acquired Axial-Flow combine. IH
was working on releasing an updated Axial-Flow
series for 1986, so Case unveiled the models as
    the 1680, 1660, 1640 and 1620. In 1989 the
models became the 1688, 1666, and 1644 with minor
improvements that farmers were looking for in the
    popular combines.

  • The Cyclo Air Planter is a drum planter with a
seed-metering system with only three moving
parts the seed drum, the seed cut-off brush, and
the seed release wheel assembly. This planter
concept allows accurate planting of irregular
sized seeds. The Cyclo also offers a single large
hopper that reduces fill time. In the 1980's IH
introduced the Early Riser planters that offered
a narrower seed trench, with more precise seed
placement. After the 1985 merger of IH and J.I.
Case, the Cyclo Air line survived and was updated
to the 900 series in 1987.  For a short time in
    the late 1990's CaseIH offered a 24 row 955
Cyclo-Air planter. The model pictured above is a
1/64 scale CaseIH 955 Cyclo Air Planter built by
Justin Van Westen.  It is a 24-30" planter set up
with liquid popup fertilizer for corn planting.
The frame and markers are all made of brass,
which was soldered together. The markers function
the way they should (the end goes in and out when
the bottom is moved) and the frame raises using a
hydraulic cylinder on the main wheel assembly.
In 1991 a Case International 12 row 900 Cyclo Air
Planter was offered by Ertl as well as a 1/16 4
    row model.
