Review of MN Immigrants
  • Approximately 12 million undocumented people are
    currently residing in the United States.
  • An estimated 55,000-85,000 of those undocumented
    people live in Minnesota.
  • Currently 6.3 of Minnesotas population is
    foreign born, which is less than half the
    national average.
  • In 2006, the 18,254 immigrants legally admitted
    to Minnesota came from
  • 40 Africa, 35 Asia, 10.7 Europe,
  • 10 North America (Canada and Mexico),
  • 4 South America, .3 other
  • From 1999-2003, refugees from 30 countries came
    to Minnesota, equaling just over 2 of the total
    amount admitted.
  • 25-50 of Minnesotas immigrants are refugees,
    compared to 8 of the nations immigrants.
  • Estimated number of Illegal Immigrants as of 2000

  • What is it?
  • The separation of local law enforcement and
    federal law enforcement concerning illegal
    immigrants
  • What does that mean?
  • It means illegal immigrants are able to interact
    with police without fearing deportation during
    routine procedures.

  • Sadly, no.

  • Yes and No.

  • Booked and deported
  • Charged with misdemeanor minimum 2 weeks, up to
    6 months jail time for repeat offenders, with
    immediate deportation once released
  • Overloading court systems

  • Created in 2003
  • Focus on Employers
  • 2,000-10,000 fine depending on offense
  • 2006- 600,000 in criminal charges
  • 2007- 30 million, dominated by a few big
    charges, such as 17 million for a nation-wide
    cleaning contractor business
  • Possible jail time as well, up to six months
