    learning and assessment in practice
  • Consists of standards for educational roles plus
    a series of processes to strengthen learning and
    assessment
  • Published in August 2006, for implementation in
    September 2007
  • Integrates recommendations from Learning and
    Assessment in practice consultation (2004),
    Review of Fitness for Practice at the Point of
    Registration consultation (2005) and results of
    study commissioned by NMC, Failing Students
    (Duffy, 2003)

Developmental Framework
  • Outcomes from eight domains written for four
    stages

  • Underpinned by five principles

Mentor
  • An NMC registrant who, following successful
    completion of an NMC approved mentor preparation
    programme (or equivalent) has achieved the
    knowledge, skills and competence to meet the
    mentor standard (leads to entry on a local
    register)
  • Students on NMC approved
  • - pre-registration nursing education
    programmes
  • - specialist practice programmes
  • must be supported and assessed in practice by
    mentors
  • Students on NMC approved midwifery programmes
    must be supported and assessed by sign-off
    mentors

Practice Teacher
  • An NMC registrant who will normally have
    previously fulfilled the NMC requirements to
    become a mentor and who has received further
    preparation (through successful completion of an
    NMC approved PT preparation programme or
    equivalent) to achieve the knowledge, skills and
    competence required to meet the NMC practice
    teacher standard (leads to entry on a local
    register)
  • Students on NMC approved specialist community
    public health nursing programmes must be
    supported and assessed in practice by practice
    teachers

Sign-off Mentor
  • Mentors/ practice teachers who are designated to
    be able to sign-off proficiency at the end of a
    programme
  • Must meet additional criteria (leads to
    annotation on a local register)
  • All midwifery mentors to be sign-off mentors
  • All practice teachers to meet the additional
    criteria to be able to sign-off proficiency

Teacher
  • An NMC registrant who, following successful
    completion of an NMC approved teacher preparation
    programme (or equivalent) has achieved the
    knowledge, skills and competence required to meet
    the teacher standard (leads to a recorded entry
    on the NMC register)
  • The NMC teacher standard is mandatory for those
    registrants who are teachers employed in higher
    education who support students on NMC approved
    programmes

Local Registers for Mentors and Practice Teachers
  • Placement providers keep an up-to-date local
    register of current mentors and practice
    teachers.
  • (Provides evidence of sufficient practice
    teachers and mentors, (including those meeting
    additional requirements) who meet the NMC
    standards to support learning and assessment in
    practice for NMC approved programmes.)

Review and maintenance of mentor/practice teacher
qualifications
  • Annual updating (including an opportunity to meet
    and explore assessment and supervision issues
    with peers)
  • Triennial review of all mentors and practice
    teachers -
  • demonstrate ongoing currency and standards
  • Arrangements for addressing concerns, adding and
    removing from mentor/practice teacher register

Strengthening the Mentor/ Practice Teacher role
  • 40 of a students time should be spent being
    supervised by a mentor or practice teacher
  • In addition, sign-off mentor to spend one hour
    per week on reflective learning, feedback and
    record keeping with student during the final
    placement

Strengthening Assessment
  • Due regard must be applied to assessment of
    outcomes/ proficiency
  • (i.e. those who make judgements about whether a
    student has achieved the required standards of
    proficiency for safe, effective practice must be
    from the same part/ sub part of the register as
    that which the student intends to enter)
  • Ongoing achievement record
  • Use of simulation where learning opportunities
    are limited
