Background

• Established in 1984 to improve the quality of
  precollege education and to raise the level of
  functional and technological literacy of United
  States students by placing emphasis on
  mathematics and science.

Objective

• to keep alive the innate curiosity of young
  children about science as they move into middle
  school and high school, so that they will
  continue to study mathematics, science and
  technology.

• to effect improvements in the math, science, and
  technology education of all precollege students
  in the United States and to help raise their
  functional and technological literacy. Its work
  is expected to have an influence at the national,
  state, and local levels.

Functions

• strive to involve IEEE members in precollege
  activities at all levels
• should cooperate with other technical,
  scientific, and professional societies..
• will seek the help and support of various IEEE
  entities such as the RAB, the EAB, the EAB
  Committee for Precollege Education Coordination,
  IEEE USA Professional Activities Committees for
  Engineers, technical societies, Sections,
  government bodies, textbook publishers and others

Functions Contd

• The committee may publish appropriate articles
  draft and distribute position papers organize
  workshops or conferences, alone or in cooperation
  with other IEEE entities, teachers
  organizations, and others and develop training
  materials for engineers to help in their
  interactions with educators and students.

Membership

• An executive committee will consist of no more
  than 10 committee members the chair, the past
  chair, one member selected from each of the six
  US Regions, a young professional, and the Chair
  of the EAB Committee for Precollege Education
  Coordination.

• Sponsor of 2 awards
• Best Communications System Award
• Teacher/Engineer Partnership Award
• The Precollege Teacher Grant Program
• funded by the IEEE Foundation
• Up to 1500 available per proposal
• A precollege brochure was developed targeted
  towards middle school students. The brochure was
  sent to museums across Regions 1-6.
• Several open discussion items exist including
• A precollege education website
• A virtual community
• Corporate sponsorship of the teacher grant
  program
• Participating in an educator convention, e.g.,
  exhibitor, presentation

• Between 26K-28K is budgeted annually
• The PEC holds two face to face meetings annually
• Any additional funding is obtained from other
  sources
