• Definitions of the Internet
• A network of computer networks which operates
  world-wide using a common set of communications
  protocols
• The vast collection of inter-connected networks
  across the world that all use the TCP/IP
  protocols
• TCP is Transmission Control Protocol which makes
  up for IP's deficiencies by providing reliable,
  stream-oriented connections that hide most of
  IP's shortcomings. The protocol suite gets its
  name because most TCP/IP protocols are based on
  TCP, which is in turn based on IP

• Originally started in 1969 with 4 computers and
  was called DARPANET
• Was launched by the U.S. Department of Defense
• Created as a system of communication that could
  not be destroyed in the event of an emergency
• Linked computers over telephone lines so that if
  one computer failed then the others would still
  be able to communicate
• Then it became ARPANET which then became MILNET

• In 1984 the name changed again, this time to
  NSFNET
• As the system developed people found more uses
  for the internet, such as sending messages and
  files between computers
• During the 1970s standards for messages were
  beginning to start
• By the end of the 1970s computer networks had
  become international, but only to a small extent

• In 1989 the first network in Australia was linked
  to the Internet
• In 1995 Telstra bought AARNet and this began the
  gateway to homepages for commercial and private
  use and this is when the internet really started
  to become popular
• The U.S. Department of Defense no longer owns the
  internet, no one does

• Definitions of Homepage
• A document you access from a World Wide Web
  browser, such as Netscape, Mosaic, or Lynx. It
  usually denotes the main document in a series of
  related documents
• The main web page for an organization, person or
  interest group. It is usually the first, or
  welcoming, page of a Web site.

• The homepage of a web site is the entry point to
  the site. It is the page that will usually have a
  web address (AKA URL) that ends with .com, .edu,
  .org, .gov or .countrycode (the 2 letter code for
  the country outside the USA). While the homepage
  is designed to be the entry point to a web site,
  designers cannot assume that all viewers will
  enter the web site by that page and online
  advertising does not require the direction of
  users to homepages as opposed to pages within a
  website.

• Homepages help support free speech everywhere
• The internet is a commonly used form of media and
  is frequented by people of all ages
• Popularity of the internet has grown largely to
  the mass amount of information it provides on a
  wide variety of subjects
• Homepages are an especially common source of
  information frequented by internet users
• Homepages provide a way of gathering knowledge
  for the viewer or user on many different topics,
  and everyday people use it often to research
  places, products or organizations
• Research has shown that homepages are being used
  more and more as a way of reinventing public
  image for organizations and communicating with
  the public

• Without the use of computers we would not have
  the internet
• If we did not have the internet we would not have
  homepages
• Without homepages we would be without one of the
  most significant sources of information and
  growing knowledge resource
• Thus, the computer has greatly affected the way
  we research and gather knowledge, and through
  this has affected our lives and future as a
  whole.
