Mission
The mission of NRD Pittsburgh Public Affairs is
to provide support to recruiting efforts through
Navy Awareness by providing recruiters assistance
with command and CNRC assets, media exposure,
training and communications.

COMREL
It is the mission of the PAO to administer the
Community Relations program.
- COMMUNITY RELATIONS (COMREL) are projects that
bring the Navy into the community. - It is the responsibility of the local recruiters
to get involved with their community - Not all projects need PAO assistance, but should
have after action reports sent to the PAO for
documentation and future planning - REACH CENTER OF INFLUENCES
- PAO is here to assist recruiter driven COMREL
projects.

Media Relations
It is the mission of the PAO to maintain close
ties with local/national media.
- Monthly media visits to various outlets to
encourage the use of PSAs and Navy Awareness in
the community. - Act as spokesman for command for media queries
- Formulate marketing strategies to maximize the
Navy image in the public. - Write articles and press releases for all news
worthy of that media outlets audience.

Internal News
It is the mission of the PAO to administer the
Internal News Communications.
- Forward the daily early bird that goes to CNRC
to department heads. - Maintain a bi-monthly newsletter to the
Recruiting Stations on news from the District,
CNRC and the Fleet. - Prepare Public Affairs Guidance (PAGs) for the
command on issues that Sailors may be approached
to comment on. - Keep the Sailors informed.

Marketing
It is the mission of the PAO to nurture and grow
Navy awareness within the District.
- The largest portion of the PAO job.
- Create venues in which the Navy can showcase
themselves, the importance of their mission and
the opportunities of service. - Assist Recruiters in their Navy
Awareness/Recruiting Efforts by securing
Recruiting Assistance Devices from water bottles
to flight simulators. - Ensure that the largest audience impact is
available by marketing all Navy events to the
widest audience possible. - Create After Action Reports and analysis to grow
and strengthen future marketing event.s

PSA
Public Service Announcements are one of the most
under-utilized tools in the recruiting bag.
Mostly, because it is difficult to see the
results for the amount of work. However, CNRC has
mandated that everyone should participate in the
PSA program.
- PSAs are free advertising for the Navy.
- Comes in Print, Radio and TV spots
- PAO administers the program
- Recruiters should make regular visits to media
outlets to build a relationship with the media
centers of influence. - Commands are authorized to give awards to
participants of PSA program

Summary
Public Affairs is a tool for recruiting in the
long-term. It builds Navy Awareness, positive
image, and influences COIs. Public Affairs not
only keeps Sailors informed about what is going
on in the Fleet, it also assists them by
cultivating an environment in the local community
that makes the Navy a choice of opportunity and
pride to all Pennsylvanians.
