3In 1776, a new nation was formed.the United
States of America. The Declaration of
Independence gave the citizens of this new
country their freedom from England.
4The population of the U. S. was less than one
million people in 13 independent states. Each
state governed by their own laws.
5Things were not well. The states fought among
themselves. The states were not united at all.
6It was clear that the Articles of Confederation
adopted by the Continental Congress was not
enough. Nearly every state had written their own
Constitution.
7In 1787 74 delegates from 12 states met to write
a constitution. Only Rhode Island failed to send
a delegation. They did not want to lose control
of their affairs. Even George Washington had to
be persuaded to come. He was doubtful that
national unity could ever be achieved.
8Finally, on September 15th, the Constitution was
written on parchment. Two days later it was
adopted. Only 39 delegates were willing to sign
it. It took years for all of the states to
accept it.
9The Preamble of the United States Constitution
Preamble The first part of something, an
introduction.
10We the people of the United States
All of the people in our country, including kids.
11In order to form a more perfect union
To come together and make things better for
everyone who lives in our country.
12Establish Justice
To make things fair and honest for everyone.
13Insure domestic tranquility
To make sure we can all have a nice life and get
along with one another.
14Promote the general welfare
To help make life good for everybody. Having
enough to eat, a place to live, being safe, and
having friends and fun times are some of the
things that make our lives good.
15Provide for the common defense
To protect us from other people or countries who
might try to harm us, as in a war, and to help us
if we have been harmed.
16And secure the blessings of liberty
To protect our rights and freedoms and not let
anyone take them away. Being able to choose our
religion, to say what we think, and get together
with friends, family, and other people are some
freedoms we have.
17To ourselves and our posterity
For kids, parents, other grown-ups, and all the
people born in our country after we are.
18Do ordain and establish this constitution
To write down, and then to live by, a list of
rules and promises for our government to keep and
our people to obey.
19For the United States of America
Our country where we live.
20The Constitution
Is the foundation of American Government.
21The Constitution.
Is an extraordinary set of laws, unique in
granting power to the people and protecting
individual rights.
22The Constitution.
Is the oldest written set of rules for running a
country still in use and it created a government
that has worked better and longer than any in
history.
23The Constitution.
Was written by our founding fathers with the idea
that the power of government should come from the
people. This is what makes America strong.
Power from the people, protected and guaranteed
by the Constitution, has kept a union of 50
states together all of these years.
