2
Current Technology
  • Products limited to Wet, Modified and DDGS
  • Typically 36 Pro-Fat, 10-12 Moisture
  • Syrup can be sold separate
  • Increased ethanol production speed can cause
incomplete fermentation resulting in burning of
    DDGS

3
Desired Changes in DDGS
  • Flow ability needs to improve
  • Sulfur levels have risen over the last 5 years
  • Phosphorus levels from a waste management
    perspective especially ruminants
  • Consistency in nutritional qualities

4
Current Changes in DDGS
  • Variation among plant designs
  • Genencor/Broin cold-cook technology
  • Broin fiber stream removal
  • Removal of corn oil for biodiesel
  • Front-end fractionation for germ and fiber

5
DDGS as Fuel
  • Studies have shown burning DDGS produces
    approximately 5000 btu/lb
  • Translates to 10 mmbtu/ton, or 3.2 million mmbtu
for a 100 mmgy ethanol plant
  • _at_8/mmbtu Natural Gas, 3.2 million mmbtu cost
    25,600,000, equal to 80/ton ddgs
  • 100 mmgy plant uses approximately 3.4 million
mmbtu in one year if drying all co-product to
    DDGS
  • Environmental Costs ?
  • Initial Equipment Costs ?
  • Increases food for fuel debate ?

Biomass Potential

10

Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Considerations- 20 mmgy
plant
  • Cost of Plant is three times todays
    corn-to-ethanol plant
  • Biomass must be pre-treated
  • Sugars to ethanol conversion still only yields 2
    concentration of ethanol
  • DOE figures biomass will be delivered for 35/ton
but industry estimates closer to 60/ton
  • Requires 79 storage facilities the size of
football fields with 1300 lbs. square bales
    stacked 6 high
  • Assuming 30 of the corn acres, and 1/3 of the
stover per acre are collected, there will be a
draw area of a 33 mile radius
