Generalities
  • Approval Process for awards
  • - A resolution must be submitted to the Board
    of Directors if approved it is sent to the
    NATCON general assembly to approve or reject the
    proposed award- if approved the Nat. IM will
    forward the petition to EMC
  • - The sponsoring unit may withdrawal the
    resolution at any time and will bear the costs of
    the award (annual fee for plaque)

Presentation/Sponsorship of Awards
  • Area awards may not have the same names as
    national awards the commander of any sponsoring
    unit may present the award in most NATCONs, the
    AAS Nat. CC presents the awards but it is of
    course allowed for the sponsoring unit
  • A sponsoring unit will be given a letter by EMC
    detailing all the financial costs to the award
    if failing to return the agreement the said
    sponsoring forfeits all rights/names to the award
    and EMC will seek new sponsors for the award

Award Nomination/Selection
  • Area CCs have the final say in nominating
    representatives/squadrons from their area for
    national awards
  • Award packages are due NLT six weeks prior to
    NATCON the Nat DS should announce a date early
    in the fall semester

Unit National Awards
  • All unit awards are submitted on the Form 903
    with all blocks filled out unless otherwise noted
  • Outstanding Squadron- chosen on officer
    development, squadron activities, and service
    projects
  • - Maryland Cup Outstanding large squadron
    (26 and over active members)
  • - Hagan Trophy Outstanding medium squadron
    (15-25 active members)
  • - Chennault Trophy Outstanding small
    squadron (14 and fewer active members)
  • Note Area plaque ribbons may be worn for
    outstanding area level awards

Unit National Awards
  • Eagle Award The squadron that contributes the
    most to civic affairs
  • - Criteria Type, magnitude and number of
    civic projects, publicity, benefits accrued
    community influence.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander,
    Unit Member (not on staff)
  • - Other Project Synopsis (Fig.16-2)
  • - Publicity (Max. 2 pages)

National Unit Awards
  • Fisher Leadership Development Award Recognizes
    the squadron with the best professional officer
    development program
  • - Criteria Squadrons long term plan (at
    least a semester) for leadership training and
    development and list of each successful activity
    completed with the training plan with a
    description of how it prompted the development of
    better officer candidates (submit the training
    plan on a bullet background paper)
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander, SW
    President, PAS, Squadron Advisor, Area Commander

National Awards
  • Samuel E. Anderson Trophy The SW unit, which
    assists the most in furthering the stated
    objectives of AAS (based on direct support)
  • - Criteria Direct support given to local AAS
    squadron
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander, SW
    President, PAS, Other Corps Commander
    Endorsement Letter (1 page)
  • LBJ Cup The squadron operating the most
    outstanding candidate program.
  • -Criteria Must send a copy of the units
    candidate manual, a synopsis of candidate
    schedules, and a summary of the program (include
    size of university, size of cadet corps, total
    number of candidates. and number of candidates
    initiated)
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander,
    Candidate Class Commander, Area Commander, Other
    Candidates Manual, Candidate Program Summary
    (best if submitted in bullet background paper),
    Advisor and PAS comments are highly recommended
  • Note LBJ Cup uses AAS Form 903

    Chapter President
  • Apollo Award The squadron and chapter best
    accomplishing the Joint National Project.
  • - Criteria Magnitude, originality and
    participation in projects, planning, and results.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander, SW
    President, Other Project Synopsis (Fig. 16-2)

  • Phoenix Award Best overall service project(s)
    in the country other than POW/MIA and Joint
    National Project.
  • - Criteria Magnitude and originality of
    projects and the benefits to organizations
    helped.
  • - Required Comments 1 page Letter from
    Squadron Commander, 1 page Endorsement Letters
    (Max. 4), Publicity Items articles or videos
    (Max. 3)
  • Colonel George Robert Hall Freedom Cup The
    squadron and chapter best supporting the POW/MIA
    Awareness program.
  • - Criteria Number of projects, publicity
    and community impact.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander, SW
    Commander, Other Project Synopsis (Fig. 16-2),
    Publicity (Max. 4 pages)

  • Gen. John D. Ryan Outstanding Public Affairs
    Award The outstanding PA program in the
    country.
  • - Criteria Diversity and ingenuity, amount
    and frequency, perseverance, improvements,
    program examples.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander,
    Other Publicity, Endorsement Letters (Max. 2)

Individual Awards
  • All nominations will be submitted on AAS Form 902
  • Arnold Air Letter Trophy Presented to the
    author of the outstanding article contributed to
    the Arnold Air Letter.
  • - Criteria Readability and impact,
    originality, and illustrative materials
  • ASU Commanders Cup The outstanding AAS
    squadron commander.
  • - Criteria Contributions to the mission and
    objectives of the USAF, AFROTC, or AFCW, AAS, and
    SW, ability to manage resources available,
    implementation of new programs, professionalism
    and leadership.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander, Unit
    Member (not on staff), SW President (if
    applicable), Squadron Advisor, Area Commander
  • Note Area commanders should select one per
    area.

Individual Awards
  • H. H. Arnold Sabre Outstanding area commander
    in the nation
  • - Required Material Area advisors may submit a
    two-page nomination letter to National HQ
  • National Commanders Award The National
    Commander recognizes those area commanders who
    have accomplished all requirements of command in
    their areas and made contributions as members of
    the Board of Directors.
  • Citations and Certificates of Appreciation Given
    to any individuals for outstanding service to the
    Society at a minimum members of the Board of
    Directors who have completed their term of office
    who have not already gotten an award

Individual Awards
  • Honorary National Commander The Board of
    Directors choose a Hon. Nat. CC during the fall
    session and the Nat CC presents him/her at
    NATCON he/she is given an AAS fourragere and
    honorary membership
  • Honorary Membership Honorary members are
    allowed to participate in all functions of the
    Society at the discretion of the unit Commander
    but are not eligible to vote. They are not
    charged due for membership

AAS Medals and Ribbons
  • General program publicly recognizes acts of
    outstanding achievements National Awards
    Committee reviews all national recommendations
  • Those eligible acts worthy of recognition
    considering duty and performance all AAS members
    eligible
  • Take care to make sure those recommended are
    outstanding acts that places the person above
    those actions of his/her peers
  • Unlimited decorations for one person but only one
    decoration awarded for the same act or
    achievement

AAS Medals and Ribbons
  • National Level Medal Presented active members
    of the Society for outstanding service to the
    national organization. No more than five medals
    are presented each year.
  • Area and Squadron Medals Presented on the area
    and squadron level for outstanding service
    criteria is up to the awarding unit

AAS Medallions
  • National Level Presented to individuals who are
    not active members of the Society, for their
    outstanding contributions to the Society ( can be
    spinner-mounted)
  • Area and Squadron Level Presented to
    individuals who are not active members of the
    Society, for their outstanding contributions to
    the Society on an area/squadron level

More Awards
  • Outstanding Squadron Advisor Each area staff
    should select one. This award is only presented
    once to any individual.
  • - Required Material Letters of nomination by
    squadron commander and any other squadron member.
    Area HQs must immediately forward the squadrons
    advisor name and detachment number to EMC upon
    choosing the advisor from their area.
  • Outstanding Area Advisor Each Area Advisor is
    eligible.
  • - Required Material Two-page nomination
    letter to National HQ by Area Commanders

More Awards
  • Outstanding Financial Manager The outstanding
    member of any AAS unit dealing with financial
    matters (does not have to be the unit Financial
    Manager). Receives 100 savings bond
  • - Criteria Amount of time spent on units
    financial matters, improvements in the unit
    financial operating procedures, and the improved
    financial condition of the unit.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander,
    Squadron Advisor, Other Pertinent information
    relating to FMs work, Social Security Number
  • Lt. Theodore C. Marrs Plaques Presented to the
    outgoing Nat. CC, SW President, NCOP, and NATCON
    CC for outstanding service to the Society

  • Manhattan Gavel Presented to the incoming Nat.
    CC
  • Scholarships EMC tries to locate sponsors for
    scholarships each year
  • Day Cup The outstanding squadron staff officer
    in the nation.
  • - Criteria Consistently high standard of
    performance in all assigned duties. Shows an
    interest in broadening his or her own experiences
    to increase his or her own value to the unit,
    AFROTC or AFCW, and the Air Force. Continuously
    promotes the ideals and standards of the USAF,
    USAFA, AFROTC, and AAS.
  • - Required Comments Squadron Commander,
    Area Commander, Squadron Advisor, Squadron Member

  • Christopher D. Nichols Award The outstanding
    sophomore at the squadron level.
  • - Criteria Professionalism, leadership,
    makes substantial contributions to the mission of
    AAS.
  • Required Comments Squadron Commander,
    Squadron Advisor

SW Awards to AAS
  • Col. A.T. Crimson Glory Award Presented to a
    member of the Society for outstanding support of
    SWS
  • - Criteria Participation in joint AAS/SWS
    activities and level of support for SWS
  • Ciccoli Joint Operations Award Given to the AAS
    squadron and SWS chapter that have best furthered
    the objectives of both organizations
