Biographical Time Line

• 1822 born in Exeter, England to French parents
• 1830 at age eight, Lily and her parents
  emigrate to the United States and settle in
  Marietta, Ohio to form a Fourist Community
• 1841 Lilys first exhibit at eighteen years
  old in Marietta, Ohio is met by the press and
  public with critical praise. As a result, the
  Cincinnati millionaire Nicholas Longworth
  discovers her and secures her training in
  Cincinnati with James Henry Beard and John Insco.
• 1841-1844 - Lily and her father live in
  Cincinnati. 19th Century politics influence here
  success.
• 1844 - Lily marries Benjamin Spencer. They
  relocate to New York where she bears thirteen
  children and raises the seven that survive. Lily
  supports her family financially while her husband
  manages the household and serves as her business
  manager promoting and selling her paintings.
• 1848- Lily exhibits her first paintings at the
  National Academy, and Art Unions
• 1851 National Academy elects Spencer Honorary
  Member, Professional
• 1902 - Died Poughkeepsie, New York
