• The maturing American environment was exemplified
  through the exquisite art that showed unexplored
  wilderness and the jobs of everyday people living
  in the time.
• American nationalism was represented by the
  grandeur and beauty hidden away in the American
  frontier.

• Painted landscapes of American wilderness
• Sought to preserve wilderness and wildlife it was
  the early form of modern day PETA

• Thus the formation of the American identity was
  illustrated through the evolution of artistic
  expression in the early 1800s.
• The American spirit was defined through the art
  that joined together the populous and presented
  the unknown wilderness of the American west.
