Title: Licensing Microsoft Products
1Microsoft Licensing Microsoft Products
2Product Activation
- Product Activation is the process of getting the
product key for your specific combination of
hardware and software - Activation exists on OEM and FPP
- OEM licences are typically pre-activated for the
customer by the OEM/system builder - See http//www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activat
ion/
3Which Products are Affected?
- Microsoft Office 2003 products (Word 2003,
Excel 2003, etc) - Microsoft Windows Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Home
Edition - And all ongoing releases
4Volume Licensing Activation
- Use Volume Licence Key (VLK)
- https//eopen.microsoft.com/
- https//licensing.microsoft.com/eLicense/
5Product Activation Misconceptions
- You must activate your software immediately
- Operating systems require activation after 30
days - Office products require activation after 50
launches or they will behave like a file viewer - You can only activate your software once
- A second activation is necessary to enable
portable use rights - Reactivation is allowed for reinstallation
- Reactivation may be required after a hardware
configuration change
6Product Use Rights
7Product Use Rights
8Product Use Rights continued
- The product use rights are part of the Microsoft
licence agreements, i.e. the right to use the
software, additional rights and limitations - Different product use rights for
- applications
- operating systems
- server products
- developer tools
9Transferring Licences
- A company may transfer a licence to another PC or
user within their organisation (providing it was
acquired through FPP or Volume licensing) - A company may make a one time permanent transfer
of a licence to a third party (providing it was
acquired through FPP or OEM) - The following must also be transferred with the
software - Original licence and any upgrade licence
confirmations - End User Licence Agreement (EULA)
- Certificate of Authenticity (COA)
- Microsoft licences may not be rented, loaned,
leased, or used for commercial hosting except
through the Service Provider Licence Agreement
(SPLA)
10Licensing of Microsoft Applications
11 Different Types of Licence
- Full Package Product (FPP)
- Full version
- Upgrade
- OEM
- Full version (must be pre-installed)
- Volume Licensing
- i.e.Open, Open Value, Select, Enterprise
Agreement, Enterprise Subscription Agreement - Full version
- OEM Office 2003 can be enrolled in SA through a
Volume Licensing Programme - No upgrades
- Downgrade rights
12 End User Licensing Agreement for Applications
- Every device requires a licence except
- GRANT OF LICENCE. Microsoft grants you the
following rights provided that you comply with
all terms and conditions of this EULA - 1.1 Installation and use. You may
- (a) install and use a copy of the Software on
one personal computer or other device and - (b) install an additional copy of the Software
on a second, portable device for the exclusive
use of the primary user of the first copy of the
Software.
13Concurrency
- Each device requires a licence
- A licence cannot be concurrently used by
different computers - Concurrent Use multiple use of a licence on
multiple PCs - Not available for Microsoft applications since
1997
4 licences required,1 for each device accessing
the server e.g. Office
14Downgrade Rights for Applications
- There are no downgrade rights in OEM or FPP
- VL customers can downgrade a single application
within Office 2003 without downgrading their
entire suite
15Licensing ofMicrosoft Operating Systems
16Windows XP Professional
- Full Package Product (FPP)
- Full version
- Upgrade
- Can be enrolled in SA through a VL Programme
- OEM
- Full version (must be pre-installed)
- Can be enrolled in SA through a VL Programme
- Volume Licensing (VL)
- i.e.Open, Open Value, Select, Enterprise
Agreement, Enterprise Subscription Agreement - Can be enrolled in SA through a VL Programme
- Windows Pro upgrade available (in certain
circumstances the underlying OS need not be
Windows) - Downgrade rights
17Embedded Products
- Dedicated computer system for a specific
application - Examples
- Retail cash registers and scales
- Banking
- Measuring devices
- Gaming machines
- Information terminals
- Industrial automation
- Medical technology
- Telecommunications
18Licensing forMicrosoft Servers
19Different Types of Licence
- Full Package Product (FPP)
- Full licence only
- Can be enrolled in SA through a Volume Licensing
Agreement - Exception Upgrade Small Business Server (SBS)
- OEM
- Full Licence only (must be sold with a fully
assembled server) - Can be enrolled in SA through a Volume Licensing

- Software Assurance Licence
- Software Assurance only on renewal

23Servers Licensed per Server
Server CALs
24 User CALs
Example Windows 2003
CALs 1
Windows 2003 Server
Server CALs
CALs are always defined by the User not the Client
1
Per User One CAL covers the total number of
devices accessing or utilising the server owned
by one person
25Cost Factors
Customers may prefer device CALs because they
have fewer devices than users or it is easier
for them to track devices For example Call
centre, factory floor or Asset Management
systems that are set up to track
devices Customers may prefer user CALs
because they have more devices than users or it
is easier for them to track users For example
Field sales people with multiple devices (Smart
Phones, PDA, Laptop etc) or because purchasing
systems are linked with HR processes that track
users
26Selling Windows CALs
- What is it?
- Its just a licence not software
- Which CAL is required?
- Product and version matching
- Where can I find CALs?
- Not included in any operating system
- Few CALs included in FPP and OEM
- Also available as part of the Core CAL
- How many are needed?
- Required amount depends on how CALs are used

35Exchange Server 2003 CALs
- Access to an Exchange Server requires a CAL
- Device CAL
- One device, used by multiple users
- User CAL
- One user, accessing the server through multiple
devices - Available separately and as part of the Core CAL
- Device and User CALs can be used to gain access
to the same server

- Server CALs
- Needed for every client device
- Exceptions SMS Clients and Microsoft Operations
Manager (MOM) Clients - Per Processor
- Only solution for Internet usage
- Easier to manage
- Often more cost-effective
If Windows Authentication is used, then Windows
CALs or a Windows Connector is also needed
