Small Grants Programme
- Community Action/ Global Impact demonstrates
that community action can maintain the fine
balance between human needs and environmental
imperatives - Funded by the GEF and implemented by UNDP
- Projects in 60 countries, 50 country offices, HQ
staff of 5 - Annual GEF Council replenishments conditional on
meeting annually established benchmarks - Funding to date 83.4 million through GEF and
55.8 million in cash or in-kind co-funding by
over 600 partners - Over 2,600 projects supported to date, maximum
50,000 per project

- Working with countries to build national

learned made available through the Approaches to

Centre for Drylands Development (CDD)
- Created in 1973 to respond to the drought in the
Sahel region - Since 1994, global mandate to support countries
in implementing the UN Convention to Combat
Desertification Drought (CCD) - Over 50 countries assisted to prepare National
Action Plans - In 2002, CDD created in Nairobi - incorporates
UNSO staff and knowledge within the decentralized
SURF system - Assistance with mainstreaming drylands issues
into development frameworks and policy
development - Reducing vulnerability and assisting in
adaptation to climate change - Development of appropriate local governance,
including local land tenure policies - Information and knowledge management (e.g.
Online Lessons Practices, Project Compendium,
DrylandNET, Desertification News)

21In Conclusion ...
- UNDP (including its trust funds), has been the
largest provider of grant funding for
environmental projects over the last decade - Core Resources have been highly successful at
leveraging Cost Share funding for UNDP managed
projects - UNDP-GEF has leveraged an average of 1.5 in
co-financing for every dollar expended on its
projects - Building Capacity of national and local
institutions in sustainable environmental, water
and energy management continues to be a
significant focus of UNDPs activities - There is a need for much greater integration of
environmental objectives with anti-poverty
policies and programmes, including Poverty
Reduction Strategy Papers
