  • Unitary government is one which delegates powers
    from a central national government comprised of a
    legislative and executive bodies, to local
    administrative units.
  • Most of the governments in the world today are
    unitary
  • The relationship between each of the 50 States of
    the U.S. and local government is unitary.

  • Confederation
  • A confederate system is one in which an alliance
    of relatively independent regional units
    delegates authority to a limited central
    administrative national government.
  • The member states have supreme authority over all
    matters except those few areas in which they have
    expressly delegated power to the central
    government.

    powers are shared between a central national
    government and regional and/or local governments.
    A written constitution divides the powers of
    government on a territorial basis.

  • Popular Sovereignty is the principle that the
    people of the United States are the source of any
    and all governmental power.
  • the consent of the governed
  • Limited Government is the principle that
    government is not all powerful, and individuals
    have rights that the government can not take away.

  • Constitutionalism is the principle that the
    government and those who govern are bound by
    fundamental law as written in a constitution.
  • the rule of law
  • Separation of powers is the principle that the
    executive, legislative and judicial branches of
    government are divided among three co-equal
    branches.

  • Division of Powers is the Constitutional
    provision by which the powers of government are
    divided on a geographic basis( i.e. between the
    National Government of the United States and the
    50 States).
  • Checks and Balances is the principle that the
    powers of the executive, legislative and judicial
    branches overlap to permit each branch of
    government to check the actions of the others.
