Camera Parts
  • Photography I
  • Compiled Spring 06, Updated Fall 06, Updated
    Spring 07

2
1. Lens Cap
  • Covers and protects the lens
  • Turns on light meter in some cameras.

3
2. Focusing Ring
  • Focuses subject clearly on the film at varying
    distances.
  • Nikon has 2 rings
  • Outside ring - adjusts focus
  • 2nd ring changes focal length of lens
  • 35 is wide angle
  • 50 is normal
  • 70 is telephoto

4
3. Distance Scale
  • Tells user what distance the lens is focused at /
how far away your subject is
  • Numbers are given in both feet and meters in
    relation to the red diamond

5
4. Depth of Field Scale
  • Scale gives the depth-of-field in relationship to
the f-stop/aperture setting and your distance.
  • Note - Nikon does not have this feature.

6
5. Aperture Ring
  • Changes the size of the iris opening in the lens
to control the AMOUNT OF LIGHT that enters the
    camera.
  • Controls Depth of Field in final image.
  • Smaller / More Light / Minimum Depth of Field
  • Larger / Less Light / Maximum Depth of Field

7
Depth of Field
Aperture F5.6 Shutter 1/1000 Little/Shallow
depth of field
Aperture F22 Shutter 1/60 Greater/More depth
of field
8
6. Film Rewind and Back Opener
  • Returns the exposed film to the cassette after
    exposure.
  • Pull up to open the camera back.
  • Always wind in the direction of the arrow.

9
7. Film Chamber
  • Space for the unexposed film cassette.
  • Long end of the spool fits at the bottom of the
    space.
  • Film should be plastic side out, unrolling to the
    right.

10
8. Shutter Curtain
  • Opens and closes to expose your film for the
LENGTH OF TIME determined by the shutter speed
    setting.
  • Activated by the shutter release button.

11
9. Battery Chamber
  • Houses the light meter battery.
  • Located on the bottom of the camera body.
  • Note - If you have a fancy auto advance camera
you may have 2 batteries to check!

12
10. Hot Shoe
  • Place where flash unit is attached.

13
11. Self Timer
  • Allows the photographer to be in the photo by
automatically triggering the shutter on a delayed
    release.
  • Also useful if shooting with low shutter speeds -
set camera on something stable to eliminate
    camera movement

14
12. Shutter Speed Dial
  • Selects the LENGTH OF TIME the shutter curtains
are open to expose film in fractions of seconds.
  • Example - 60 is 1/60th of a second.
  • Works with the aperture to control your light
    meter.
  • Controls motion in final image
  • 1/60 or slower - blur
  • 1/250 faster - stop

15
13. ASA Setting
  • Sets light meter to match the sensitivity (film
speed) of the film in the camera.
  • Set ASA by lifting outer ring of shutter speed
    dial and rotating.
  • Setting NEVER changes during roll of film

16
14. Shutter Release Button
  • Releases the shutter curtains to expose the film
    and take the photograph.

17
15. Film Counter
  • Indicates number of exposures already taken.
  • Some automatic cameras count down instead of up.

18
16. Film Advance and Shutter Cock
  • Moves the film through the camera by use of the
    sprockets.
  • Sets the shutter spring mechanism for the next
    frame.
  • Nikon - Adv. Lever must be in ready position to
    release shutter.

19
17. Viewfinder
  • Used to aim camera
  • Frame the subject
  • Visual check when Focusing
  • Read the light meter, which is located inside the
    camera body.

20
Light Meter
  • Allows you to see if your aperture and shutter
speed settings are allowing enough light into the
camera to achieve a good negative

21
18. Film Guide Rails
  • Guides the film straight and flat through the
    back of the camera.

22
19. Film Advance Sprocket
  • The gear teeth fit the holes in the film to pull
it through the camera and to measure the frames.

23
20. Film Take-up Spool
  • Stores exposed film until it is rewound into the
    cassette.
  • Note - film will advance onto take-up spool
    emulsion side out.

24
21. Camera Back andPressure Plate
  • Light tight cover of the camera.
  • Keeps film flat going across back of the camera.

25
22. Film Rewind Button
  • Disengages film advance sprocket to ALLOW FILM TO
    BE REWOUND.
  • Note - You must push this button to rewind film -
failure to do so will result in ruined film.

26
23. Accessory Mount
  • Universal Screw-mounting hole for extra
    accessories.
  • Most commonly used for a tri-pod or for an
    external flash

27
24. Camera Body
  • Light tight body that contains
  • shutter,
  • light meter,
  • film transport system, and
  • lens mounting ring.

28
25. Lens System
  • Gathers and collects light.
  • Focuses the image on the film.
  • Controls the AMOUNT OF LIGHT through the aperture
    (f-stop).
