Title: Associaci Rauxa
1 ASSOCIACIÓ RAUXA Barcelona - Spain Dra.
Mª Luisa Marín Puig
2Introduction
According to PNUD (1) more than a thousand
million people live in abject poverty. Great
pockets of poverty start to appear in our
privileged industrial society, that is, the so
called fourth world is born. It is estimated that
Europe has 53 million poor, of which 3 million
are homeless (2). Some approximate figures about
the number of homeless in some European cities
show how important this issue is. In London there
are about 15,000 in Paris 10,000 in Rome
about 6,000 in Madrid 4,000 (3). Barcelona has
approximately the same number of homeless as the
capital city of Spain. Many authors point out the
great proportion of health problems among the
homeless, alcoholism being the most common (4).
Even some researchers consider that alcohol
dependence is the main cause of the situations of
poverty and of people living in the fringes of
society(5). This type of population is a
heterogeneous group being very difficult to know
and take a census of them. They usually live on
the margin of social and health structures but on
the other hand they go to hospital emergency
wards generating high expenses. But a great
majority has never been seen. For all the
aforementioned, we believe that we must introduce
new formulae to seek and approach this group, at
least in the first phases. It is also necessary
to give long term response till they reach a
minimum autonomy. It is in order to give response
to this serious problem and palliate the extreme
situation of the derelict or chronic homeless in
Barcelona, that the ASSOCIACIÓ RAUXA, a non
profit organization basically run by volunteers,
was founded in 1989 .
