7What is Self-care?
- Self-care is a lifelong habit and culture. It is
the action individuals take for themselves and
their families to stay healthy and manage minor
and chronic conditions, based on their knowledge
and the information available and working in
collaboration with healthcare professionals where
necessary.
8A spectrum of care
- Making healthy choices of diet, exercise etc.
which allow maintenance of health, prevention of
ill health and effective use of medicines and
health care interventions, including equipment
where necessary - Self-treatment involving responsible use of
mediation (OTC and Rx) - Self-management of symptoms of disease alone, in
partnership with professionals or others with
same condition - Self-diagnosis in making risk assessments of
symptoms, screening and assessing these if needed
with professionals who need not be a doctor
9Successful self-care
- Attitudes of individuals must be non-dependent
and responsible - Attitudes of healthcare professionals must
change to facilitate this - Information and education in schools
- Applies to both well and ill people encompassing
proactive promotion of wellness and not just
crisis management of illness - Needs choices to be available
- Needs NHS to support individual choices even
before entering the NHS
10Successful self-care
Leads to effective access to next stages
Self-care behaviour
Needs support in the form of information educatio
n and advice
Wellness Empowerment
