Birth of a Financial Services Platform
  • Birth of a Financial Services Platform How
NetBank used .NET to build an agile and open
    solution
  • Russell Wilson
  • Director, eCommerce Solutions
  • RBMG, Inc (a NetBank, Inc. Company)

4
Who is NetBank, Inc.?
  • Holding company for largest Internet only
(branchless) bank in the world, NetBank.
  • Parent of RBMG, Inc - a Wholesale Mortgage
Lender. In top 15 of all Wholesale Lenders in the
US with 2001 volumes in excess of 11 billion.
  • Parent of NetBank Insurance - an Internet based
    independent insurance agency offering personal
Home and Auto policies from name brand insurance
    companies.

5
The Vision
  • Create a diverse Financial Services platform that
facilitates the sale of any NetBank family
product through any subsidiary or trusted
    business partner.

6
The Challenges
  • Integrate Various B2B and B2C eCommerce
    solutions, supporting backend systems and
    external service providers.
  • Reduce Cost Minimize manual intervention in the
sales process and provide a seamless experience
    to the customer.
  • Cross-sell Leverage existing customer
information to streamline the purchase of
additional products while complying with all
    state and federal privacy laws.
  • Extensibility Build an extensible architecture
that allows for the addition of new products and
services gained through product development and
    acquisition.
  • Reduce Overhead Do all of this with a minimal
increase in headcount and operational overhead.

7
The Solution
  • Re-Architect Wholesale Mortgage B2B sites to
    utilize web services.
  • Approximately 57 of all RBMG mortgages are
processed via the eRBMG B2B site. 65 is
    projected for 2003.
  • Access all 3rd party service providers such as
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac via web service
    interface.

8
The Solution
  • Provide key RBMG LOS (Loan Origination System)
    functions as web services.
  • Allow for real-time locking of rates.
  • Provide wholesale customers a comprehensive view
of all loan activity with RBMG.

9
The Solution
  • Build Insurance platform that provides core
functions as web services and utilizes ASP.NET
    for private labeling/co-branding feature.
  • Insurance solution must integrate directly into
    NetBank.com site.
  • Must provide programmatic interface (web service)
to allow trusted partners to request bindable
    rate quotes.

10
The Solution - NetInsurance
Programmatic Interface
Private Label Website
11
The Solution
  • Define standard XML schemas for customer and
product information to service the cross-sell and
    CRM needs of the organization.
  • Utilize new industry standard (MISMO) XML schemas
    whenever possible.

12
Architecture - eRBMG
Web Service Layer
eRBMG
ASP.NET
13
Why Did We Choose .NET?
  • Staff experience with previous Microsoft
    technologies.
  • Quality of Visual Studio.NET.
  • Simplicity of developing web services with
    Microsoft tools.
  • Features of ASP.NET that accelerated development
    times.

14
Lessons Learned (So far)
  • Security of web services is not yet mature. There
are potentially big risks associated with going
beyond trusted partners over the internet.
  • Performance of web services must be closely
    watched.
  • Web services are not the answer to every problem.
  • Get training for your staff. Though learning
curve is not as steep as some promote, it is not
    a seamless transition.
